Official Synopsis: Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. Hick (2011)

Official Synopsis: Thirteen-year-old Nebraska girl Luli (Chloe Grace Moretz) has been dealt a rough hand. Her mother and father spend their evenings getting obnoxiously plastered at the local watering hole, then go at it like a pair of trashy, drunk teenagers. Worse, they manage to throw down at Luli’s birthday party. Certain she’s destined for a more glamorous life, Luli packs her things — including her new birthday gift, a Smith & Wesson .45 — and hitches a ride to Vegas. Killer Elite (2011)

Official Synopsis: Based on a true story, Killer Elite races across the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East in the action-packed account of an ex-special ops agent (Jason Statham) who is lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor (Robert De Niro). To make the rescue, he must complete a near-impossible mission of killing three tough-as-nails assassins with a cunning leader (Clive Owen).

Footloose (2011)

A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.

ROMANCING THE STONE Remake Becomes TV Series

Last week, I wrote a post in which I discussed the news of a "Romancing the Stone" remake. Today, in a surprising turn of events, NBC has hired writer Mark Friedman ("Home of the Brave", "The Forgotten" TV series) and director Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum", "Date Night", "Real Steel") to turn the 1984 adventure movie into a TV series. Levy will probably direct the pilot episode and stay on the show as a producer and writer. At the moment it's unclear whether or not there will also be a feature length remake and if there will be one, it will probably be directed by Shawn Levy. FLATLINERS and ROMANCING THE STONE Remakes

Because I am aware that Hollywood has reached some kind of creative bankruptcy, I am no longer surprised when I hear news that movies like the 1984 adventure flick "Romancing the Stone" and the 1990 sci-fi thriller "Flatliners" are about to be remade. It seems like the 80's are very endearing to producers right now, considering we also have a "Dirty Dancing" update in the crosshairs and the "Footloose" remake coming this October, among others. "Romancing the Stone" and "Flatliners" did not gross obscene amounts of money during their release in theaters, but they are pretty popular. Let's take a look at each movie individually.

Kenny Ortega to Direct DIRTY DANCING Remake

Lionsgate attempted once before to revive the franchise, if you can call it that, with a sequel called "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights", in 2004. Unfortunately, the movie tanked at the box-office, grossing a low $27M worldwide, compared to the original's $214M, which meant not only that they couldn't get fans of the original to come see the sequel, but the movie failed to attract audiences of any kind. So, in a final attempt to cash in on the 1987 classic, they decided to go for a remake and they already have a director lined up for the job, Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical") who was also the choreographer on the original "Dirty Dancing". No other info is available on the project for now, but it's estimated that a 2013 release date is very likely, especially considering 2012 is pretty muched booked by all kinds of big movies. The funny thing is that despite Lionsgate's enthusiasm to get this project started, a lot of people have turned to social networks and forums to express their anger and protest against the making of this remake. I'm not a fan of "Dirty Dancing", in fact I never even thougt it was that good apart from its attractive soundtrack, but I too think this remake might be a bad idea, because angering your fanbase will not sell tickets.

EVIL DEAD Remake is Alive and Well

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the "Evil Dead" franchise. The third and last of Sam Raimi's horror adventure was released almost 20 years ago, in 1993 and since then the series has lost its momentum despite fans still keeping their hopes up. As time went by, Bruce Campbell grew older and Sam Raimi went to work on the "Spiderman" franchise, it became fairly obvious there was no point in making a sequel anymore. Fans were no doubt worried and even I was a little disappointed about the whole situation. Eventually, Sam Raimi and co. decided on a remake, one that would hopefully reboot the franchise and spawn another trilogy. Read on to see what the future holds for the new "Evil Dead".

TOTAL RECALL Remake First Official Image

The first official image from Len Wiseman's remake of "Total Recall" has hit the web, via Collider.com. As you can see it's appropriately intense and Colin Farrell echoes his days when he was playing a CIA rookie on the run in "The Recruit" (co-starring Al Pacino). In the midst of a future war between Euromerica and New Shanghai, Doug Quaid (Farrell), a factory worker, becomes convinced he's a spy, but doesn't know who exactly it is he's working for. The remake is still in its production stages, with the release date set for August 3, 2012. The movie also stars Kate Beckinsale (the director's wife), Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, John Cho and Ethan Hawke (in an undisclosed cameo). I'm honestly harboring some mixed feelings about this one. Sure, it's going to be a lot more faithful to Phillip K. Dick's source material, but is that really enough ? Paul Verhoeven's version had a particularly engaging style and his trademark over-the-top violence, which made the movie a dark violent sci-fi thriller that worked far better than anybody expected. Will Len Wiseman's workmanlike directorial talents be enough ? I mean he managed to make "Die Hard 4" unconvincing and flat. Is he really the right man for this remake ?

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D Remake Coming in 2012

I'm a little confused here. Apparently, producer Carl Mazzocone and director John Luessenhop ("Takers") are working on a remake of Tobe Hooper's cult classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I'm confused, because, I thought we already had remake, produced by Michael Bay, in 2003, directed by Marcus Nispel ("Conan the Barbarian 3D"). That movie even had a prequel in 2006. Nevertheless, here they are, doing an update of the original story, in 3D. Well, at least it's not produced by Michael Bay. The movie is set for release on October 5, 2012.

So far it has been revealed that the story will take place after the events of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original. The screenplay was written by Luessenhop, Adam Marcus ("Jason Goes to Hell") and Debra Sullivan ("Danielle Steel's Once in a Lifetime"). The cast so far includes Alexandra Daddario ("Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief") and Bill Moseley ("Repo! The Genetic Opers"). How this one will turn out, we'll see, but I have a feeling this should have been a direct-to-video release, instead of slashing our wallets wide open with the 3D ticket sales.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Controversial Nude Poster

"The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas", more often known as "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. ramps up a gritty publicity campaign, befitting of a hard R-rated David Fincher movie. After the Red-Band trailer that debuted in theaters in May (featured in the Related Posts section below), which included some nudity and violence, the newest sample of gratuitous R-rated publicity is the teaser poster. On it you can see a topless Rooney Mara in full piercing gear and a grumpy Daniel Graig wrapping his arm around her in a protective manner.

The poster is available in two versions, one where the movie's release date covers the naughty bits and one where it's all fully revealed. Word on the web is that this is some kind of international one-sheet. Nevertheless, it's a bold campaign looking to capitalize on the controversial factor in order to get people to show up in theaters when the movie opens on December 21. Let's hope the movie is as ballsy as this poster seems to want to make us think it is. The Swedish adaptation of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy had some hardcore stuff in it, so you can imagine that Fincher's version has some big shoes to fill.
