GMA Network on 1st Integrity Summit: Accountability and Transparency

GMA NEWS:

If corruption is to be eliminated in the private sector, executives need to take charge in espousing business integrity and accountability, business executives said Wednesday.

During the 1st Integrity Summit organized by the private sector, business leaders shared the best practices they employ in their respective firms to uphold ethical conduct within their organization.

“The top executives of GMA Network took the initiative to implement [ethical practices] within the company," shared Mike Enriquez, senior vice-president for radio of GMA Network Inc., in his speech.

Enriquez said that the company's board strongly advocates accountability, transparency and integrity, from which the News and Public Affairs division of the network modeled its public service thrust.

Accountability, transparency

“Our CEO Atty. Felipe Gozon is not treated as an emperor or a king. He is accountable to the board. And we are obligated by our bosses to walk the talk," Enriquez added.

As part of its desire to promote integrity within the network, the company was the first TV network to create and publish its own ethics manual, place suggestion boxes all over the facility, regularly update its shareholders on its financial performance, and create a programming committee which constantly evaluates program proposals, Enriquez said.

The veteran newsman said that efforts to promote and practice integrity have paid dividends for the company, especially in terms of increasing its bottom line. “The more people believe [in] us, the more they perceive us to have integrity, the more they watch our programs," he said

The challenge, Enriquez added, is to promote the same level of integrity across the business sector. “Trustworthiness is the essence of a good broadcast entity, but it is also the essence of good business," he said. “Having a universally accepted standard [on integrity] is a must for the business community."

Private sector Integrity Pledge

The Integrity Summit is an effort by the Makati Business Club and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, which seeks to stamp out corruption, not only in government but in the private sector as well, in line with President Benigno Aquino III's thrust toward eliminating corruption in government.

Currently, about 700 companies from across all industries have signed the Integrity Pledge, along with 13 Cabinet secretaries which include Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II, among others.

SECOND PLACE
Company: GMA Network, Inc.
Entry Title: KAPUSO ABROAD MAGAZINE Kit

NAMIC (National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications) today announced the winners of its Excellence in Multi-cultural Marketing Awards (EMMA). Held in conjunction with the Annual NAMIC Conference, the awards competition recognizes marketing efforts targeting one or more cultural segments including, but not limited to African American, Asian and Hispanic markets. The 25th Annual NAMIC Conference is scheduled for October 4-5, 2011 at the Hilton New York in Manhattan as part of Diversity Week.

"The cable industry is committed to connecting their brands with an increasingly diverse audience," said Daphne Leroy, vice president of Marketing and Communications, NAMIC. "We are pleased to honor the latest group of EMMA winners for their achievements in creating culturally-relevant marketing programs that achieve results."

The EMMA competition recognizes the cable industry's commitment to maintaining best practices, while developing creative, strategic and innovative approaches to ethnic-targeted marketing. The competition is comprised of two award categories: Marketing Tactics and Case Studies/Campaigns. Entries submitted within each category were judged within two divisions: Cable Distributors and Networks/Industry Suppliers. A judging panel of independent industry experts evaluated entries and selected all winners based on sound and innovative strategy, strength of execution against the strategy, evaluations of strategy, implementation and results. Deviating from the traditional "best of" competition method, each entry was judged against a standard of excellence and not against other entrants, resulting in the potential for zero to multiple winners in each category.

Time Warner Cable and Time Warner Cable West Region led the Cable Distributors division with three first-place wins. Time Warner Cable's first-place honors were awarded in conjunction with Castells & Asociados, the Edelman agency and ES Advertising, Inc. Eclipse Marketing Services, Inc. garnered first-place honors in two categories. Cable Distributors taking first-place honors in a single category included Comcast in collaboration with the agency, GMR Marketing and Rogers Communications with the agency, Dyversity Communications.

International Media Distribution led the Networks/Industry Suppliers division with four first-place finishes, including single category wins with the agencies, Ameredia and FUSE Ideas. BET International garnered three first-place wins, while Univision Communications Inc. earned top honors in two categories. HBO, Telemundo Network and The Africa Channel each received first-place wins in a single category.

Companies receiving a 2011 EMMA will be acknowledged during the General Session of the 25th Annual NAMIC Conference scheduled for Wednesday, October 5 at 8:45 a.m. CableFAX is the exclusive media partner of the 2011 Excellence in Multi-cultural Marketing Awards. EMMA winners will be featured in the upcoming "Diversity Week" issue of CableFAX: The Magazine.

GMA News TV International: Included in Top 20 Channels in Guam; well received in Australia

GMA NEWS:

An overwhelming number of feedbacks have greeted GMA News TV International a few weeks after it went on-air in Australia and Guam, showing that it not only delivers timely, comprehensive local news and encompassing public affairs programs from the Philippines, but also proves that it is indeed the answer to the Filipinos’ hunger for an all-news Pinoy channel.

GMA News TV International, a 24-hour channel, was born out of GMA Network’s desire to answer the global Filipinos’ yearning for the latest news and issues in the Philippines. It is backed by the most trusted, most credible, and most awarded broadcast news organization in the Philippines – GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs team.

Bringing to Filipinos worldwide this news, public affairs, and documentary channel that uses the Filipino language has brought in positive feedbacks as shared by GMA News International’s affiliates in Australia and Guam.

“GMA Network, with its three international channels GMA News TV International, GMA Pinoy TV, and GMA Life TV, offers Filipinos good value, unique, and high quality Pinoy programming. We believe the addition of the GMA News TV International channel will continue to strengthen the appeal of Fetch TV to Australia’s Filipino population," says Scott Lorson, CEO of Australia’s Fetch TV.

In Guam, GMA News TV International has been among the top 20 channels since it was first viewed on GTA’s GUdTV on July 8.

“GMA News TV International is doing very well here in Guam as many of GTA’s Filipino market base have shown overwhelming interest in adding it to their channel lineup. Like GMA Pinoy TV, it’s been consistently landing a spot in the top 20 channels due to its significant daily viewership. This only proves that GMA News TV International meets the Filipino community’s demand for programming content that’s unique from the rest," says Karen Gayle, product and content manager of GUdTV.

According to Joseph T. Francia, vice president and head of operations for GMA International, the warm reception to GMA News TV International was enough reward for the network’s move to give what Filipinos abroad have all been asking for – a GMA-branded channel that’s dedicated to news from the Philippines.

“We are encouraged by the very positive response to GMA News TV International. Apart from Australia and Guam, we also recently launched GMA News TV International in Japan, where the channel is now on test broadcast through our affiliate Access TV. We are committed to bringing the channel to even more parts of the globe in the coming months. " he says. - KBK

Kapuso Artists Welcomed in Kagay-Anon Festival

iGMA:

With the warm welcome extended by the people of Cagayan de Oro to GMA Network during its Kagay-an Festival Kapuso Night – five thousand screaming Kagay-anon fans excited to see their favorite Kapuso artsists – there is no doubt that the city indeed lives up to its name as the city of Golden Friendship.

No less than "Munting Heredera" star Katrina Halili, "Futbolilits" cast member Daniel Matsunaga, plus Kapuso artists Michelle Madrigal, Ehra Madrigal, and Will Devaughn joined the festival during the Kapuso Night at SM City Cagayan de Oro last August 28.

Each rendered a song or two with the Kagay-anon crowd singing along and jiving to the beat. Meanwhile, Daniel and Will made four young ladies blush as they participated in a game with them.

John Feir of "Iglot" and "Pepito Manaloto," Anna Maris Igpit of GMA Cebu, and Resci Rizada of GMA Davao added more fun to the whole show as hosts. The audience all the more filled the venue with their screams when the Kapuso stars got off the stage to greet their fans up close.

"I'm very surprised and thankful that in spite of the rains, so many people went out of their homes to see us perform at the Kapuso Night. I hope they had a great time with us because we definitely had a blast," shares Daniel.

The Kapuso Night at SM was just the cherry on top of GMA's participation in the Kagay-an Festival. The Kapuso celebration kicked off on Aug. 24 when RNB Prince and "Party Pilipinas" mainstay Jay-R serenaded the contestants of this year's "Miss Kagay-an". With him was fellow Kapuso talent and beauty queen Krista Kleiner, who served as one of the pageant's judges.

The following day, Anna Maris together with GMA TV Cagayan de Oro's Isyu Karon reporter Joyce Vega led the "PE Rhythmic Dance Festival" held at the Pelaez Sports Center.

GMA News TV's Balita Pilipinas Ngayon anchor Mark Salazar was also in Cagayan de Oro last Aug. 26 to showcase some of GMA News and Public Affairs' topnotch documentaries via the "Serbisyong Totoo Docu-Fest". Held at the Xavier University Little Theater, Mark willingly accommodated questions from the audience, majority of whom were students.

A "Kapuso Barangayan: Serbisyong Totoo Hatid ng GMA News and Public Affairs" was also mounted on the same day at Brgy. Bonbon where the team offered free medical check-up and snacks for the residents.

GMA Network strengthens nationwide ratings with 35% market share

GMA NEWS:

Nationwide ratings leader GMA Network Inc. (GMA) marked another winning performance this August as it further increased margins over mainstream competitor channels.

Full August data (August 28 to 31 based on overnight readings) from the more widely recognized ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement showed that GMA clobbered long-time rival ABS-CBN by scoring 35 household audience share points, or a 4.1-point margin over the latter's 30.9 points. TV5, meanwhile, finished the month with only 16.1 share points - short of even half of GMA's performance.

The lead of 4.1 points means that GMA had almost 155,000 more TV households from all over the country tuned in to its programming. Using an assumption of five viewers per household, the lead translates to GMA having about 774,000 more viewers over ABS-CBN.

Compared to TV5, amid the station's aggressive ads and promo, GMA has about 709,000 more TV households, or an estimated advantage of roughly 3.5 million more viewers.

As always, GMA is ahead in the significant areas of Total Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, comprising bulk of total television households nationwide at 77 percent and 58 percent, respectively.

GMA's total day performance in Total Urban Luzon scored 38.8 share points, higher by double digits compared to ABS-CBN's 26.1 points and TV5's 17.1 points.

The margin of 12.7 points over ABS-CBN means that GMA was the preferred channel of about 368,000 more households, and that GMA may have almost 2 million more viewers over competition. Meanwhile, the 21.7-point lead over TV5 translates to an estimated 630,000 more households, and can reach about 3 million more viewers for GMA.

In viewer-rich Mega Manila, GMA remains unmatched with 39.5 share points, again higher by double digits compared to ABS-CBN's 24.8 points and TV5's 17.8.

GMA won more than 300,000 more households, or over 1.6 million more viewers compared to ABS-CBN, using an average of five viewers per TV household. Compared to TV5, GMA had nearly half a million more households, and more than 2.4 million more viewers in the said area.

GMA was clearly dominant in the list of overall top programs in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila. Longest-running noontime variety show Eat Bulaga, family-oriented primetime soap Munting Heredera, and pioneering "epicserye" Amaya were the top three programs in the said areas.

NTC to GMA7, TV5: SkyCable signals clear, of high quality

INQUIRER:

SkyCable, the country’s leading cable TV provider, continues to provide high-quality signals for all channels in its roster, even those of rival broadcast networks, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said.

This comes despite past accusations that SkyCable had sabotaged the broadcasts of rivals of its parent firm, ABS-CBN Corp.

In a recent report, the NTC’s National Capital Region (NCR) office said the signal of GMA Channel 7 that SkyCable transmits was “found to be clear and of high quality.”

“We strive to ensure that all channels SkyCable airs are at the best quality possible, and we are happy that the NTC report validates this,” SkyCable marketing head Ray Montinola said.

“We also conduct surveys among our cable subscribers to confirm that our signal quality is consistent and acceptable for all channels,” he said.

The NTC inspection stemmed from a request made by SkyCable for the regulator to conduct an investigation on the signal quality of GMA Channel 7, ABS-CBN’s chief rival, which is being transmitted by SkyCable to its Metro Manila subscribers.

The inspection, ordered by NTC Deputy Commissioner Delilah Deles, was done at the company’s head-end facility located in Barangay (village) Little Baguio, San Juan City.
Earlier, the NTC cleared SkyCable in a signal interference suit filed by Manuel V. Pangilinan’s Associated Broadcasting Corp. (ABC), operator of the TV5 network.

TV5 had publicly accused SkyCable of interfering with TV5 transmissions, particularly in Cebu City and nearby areas.

Following an inspection, the NTC found that TV5’s poor signal quality, resulting in “double-image” reception, was a result of reflected signals from the nearby mountains of Busay and Bagbag.

Further tests made in another cable TV provider (Destiny Cable) located at Paknaan, Mandaue City, showed a similar result of a double image effect from TV5. The technical engineering team from NTC Cebu and representatives from TV5 and SkyCable participated in the joint investigation.

“The cable TV provider is not responsible for the unexplained poor broadcast transmission signal of TV5 in Cebu, as earlier alleged by the TV network,” SkyCable said.
