NAMIC (National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications) today announced the winners of its Excellence in Multi-cultural Marketing Awards (EMMA). Held in conjunction with the Annual NAMIC Conference, the awards competition recognizes marketing efforts targeting one or more cultural segments including, but not limited to African American, Asian and Hispanic markets. The 25th Annual NAMIC Conference is scheduled for October 4-5, 2011 at the Hilton New York in Manhattan as part of Diversity Week.

The EMMA competition recognizes the cable industry's commitment to maintaining best practices, while developing creative, strategic and innovative approaches to ethnic-targeted marketing. The competition is comprised of two award categories: Marketing Tactics and Case Studies/Campaigns. Entries submitted within each category were judged within two divisions: Cable Distributors and Networks/Industry Suppliers. A judging panel of independent industry experts evaluated entries and selected all winners based on sound and innovative strategy, strength of execution against the strategy, evaluations of strategy, implementation and results. Deviating from the traditional "best of" competition method, each entry was judged against a standard of excellence and not against other entrants, resulting in the potential for zero to multiple winners in each category.

Time Warner Cable and Time Warner Cable West Region led the Cable Distributors division with three first-place wins. Time Warner Cable's first-place honors were awarded in conjunction with Castells & Asociados, the Edelman agency and ES Advertising, Inc. Eclipse Marketing Services, Inc. garnered first-place honors in two categories. Cable Distributors taking first-place honors in a single category included Comcast in collaboration with the agency, GMR Marketing and Rogers Communications with the agency, Dyversity Communications.

International Media Distribution led the Networks/Industry Suppliers division with four first-place finishes, including single category wins with the agencies, Ameredia and FUSE Ideas. BET International garnered three first-place wins, while Univision Communications Inc. earned top honors in two categories. HBO, Telemundo Network and The Africa Channel each received first-place wins in a single category.

Bela Padilla wins Miss Friendship and Media's Darling awards at the Asian Super Model contest in China

Bago pa man ang Miss Universe 2011, isa nang Pinay ang may naiuwing awards mula sa isang pageant ngayong buwan.

Ito ay ang Kapuso artist na si Bela Padilla.

Naiuwi ng Sisid star ang awards na Miss Friendship at Media's Darling sa Asian Super Model Contest na ginanap sa Guilin at Nanning, Guangxi Zuang Autonomous Region, China, noong September 6 at 7.

Ayon kay Bela, 12 days ang competition.

Umalis siya ng Pilipinas noong August 27 at anim na araw silang namalagi muna sa mga bulubundukin lugar ng scenic Guilin at lunsod ng Nanning.

Tatlo silang nag-represent ng Pilipinas sa supermodel competition na ito na sinalihan ng 36 na modelo mula sa 10 countries.

Kasama ni Bela bilang Philippine representatives ang StarStruck V Avenger na si Fianca Cruz at ang professional model na si Kimberly Tan.

Malaking kumpetisyon daw ito sa China dahil todo ang promotion sa kanila through billboards, malalaking streamers, TV promos, at fashion shows.

Kuwento pa ng 20-year-old na Kapuso, kahit nagtatangkaran ang mga contestants sa competition, napansin pa rin daw siya sa kabila ng height niyang 5'6".

"Kasi kami yung pinakamadaldal!" natatawang kuwento ni Bela tungkol sa kanila nina Fianca at Kimberly.

Masyado raw kasing seryoso at pormal ang karamihang girls na kasali sa competition. Samantalang sila nina Fianca, panay ang pakikipagkuwentuhan at pakikisalamuha.

"Yung China, tatlo silang kasali. Seryoso talaga sila, super ang tatangkad nila at sobrang ang gaganda. They really picked the best for this competition.

"Tapos yung ibang girls, kapag walang ginagawa, pag breaktime, nakatulala lang sila. As in seryoso sila. Hindi sila masyadong talkative. Sobrang pormal.

"Kami, nakikipagtsikahan."

Noong una raw ay nahirapan silang makipag-usap sa mga kasali, lalo na sa Chinese representatives na walang mga kasamang interpreter.

"Kasi home country sila, e. Tapos wala silang Facebook. So, wala kaming common ground na mapag-usapan.

"Pero after a while, katsika ko na yung isang China, pinaglalaruan na nila yung buhok ko.

"Parang ginawa na nila akong doll kasi nga, ako yung pinakamaliit. So, naging friend ko sila.

"Tapos yun, isa-isa na. Parang ang dami nang nakikipag-usap sa akin."

GMA-7's I-Witness wins 2011 Lasallian Scholarum Award

"A moving documentary about commitment and no-surrender, about families carrying each other through the good and the bad and into, hopefully, a better future--"Pasan-Pasan," the eye-opening I-Witness documentary which aired June of last year, brought home the award for Outstanding Televised Feature on Youth and Education during the recent The Lasallian Scholarum Awards 2011.

"The story, which also hopes to change the way people define the word "burden," is from I-Witness host Sandra Aguinaldo and her team which was honored, in the only broadcast media category, for its outstanding televised feature story on Filipino youth and education issues.

"Pasan-Pasan" tells of families who know the true meaning of love and commitment. Among them, brothers Pablito and Jason. Pablito is 18 years old. Yet he cannot walk, eat, or bathe alone. His bones are too brittle; in fact, he's had fractures all over his body. But whatever pain his broken bones may bring is soothed by the loyalty of his number one champion--his brother Jason. Every day, Jason lifts Pablito on his back to take him to a school for persons with disabilities. For its commitment to delivering credible and quality television programming, the network was conferred the Outstanding Television Station for 2011 award by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC).

In its citation, VACC commended GMA's "valuable service to the community through consistent quality television programming that tackles timely issues and concerns and its professional and balanced treatment of news and documentaries particularly those that underscore the cause of victims and the criminal justice system."

GMA dominated other industry nominees in the roster of major VACC awards headlined by major citations received by GMA News TV (GNTV), the first and only news and public affairs channel on Philippine free TV, as well as the station's radio broadcast subsidiary, DZBB 594 khz.

GNTV's primetime newscast State of the nation, anchored by Peabody awardee and the country's most awarded broadcast journalist Jessica Soho, was given the Outstanding Television Program Award.

Similarly, DZBB, led by Mike Enriquez, one of the country's most credible broadcast journalists, won the Outstanding Radio Station recognition.

Soho and Enriquez were respectively recognized by the VACC as Outstanding Television Host and Outstanding Radio Host.

Championing the Filipino language

2011 Seoul International Drama Award winners

The 2011 Seoul International Drama Awards ceremony held Aug. 31 at the KBS Hall in Seoul honored outstanding dramas, actors, directors and writers, drawing 204 drama entries from 37 countries.

The Chinese drama “Three Kingdoms” won the night’s Grand Prize as the “world’s best drama” for 2010 to 2011.

The Golden Bird and Silver Bird Prizes were presented to two outstanding dramas in the TV movie, mini-series and series drama categories.

In the TV movie category, Germany’s “Shades of Happiness” won the Top Excellence Award with Ireland’s “When Harvey Met Bob” bagging the Excellence Award.

In the mini-series category, “Luther” of the United Kingdom won the Golden Bird while “Pillars of the Earth” from Germany won the Silver Bird prize.

In the series category, Romania’s “In the Name of Honour” won the top prize while Brazil’s “Passione” was runner-up.

Afghanistan’s “Eagle Four” and New Zealand’s “The Amazing Extraordinary Friends 5” were given the special awards while the United States’ “The Walking Dead” was honored with the invitational award.

In the individual awards, Miguel Alexandre won as best director for “Shades of Happiness” while Spain’s Albert Espinosa bagged the best screenwriter award for “The Red Band Society."

The best actor award went to Jianbin Chen for “Three Kingdoms” while Na Moon Hee won as best actress for the Korean drama “It’s Me, Grandma."

In the Yahoo! People’s Choice online voting, singer and actor Park Yoochun, member of boy band JYJ, won the popularity award for Korea.

Other winners are Charmaine Sheh for Hong Kong, Xiaotong Yu for China, Ryunosuke Kamiki for Japan and Man Shu Jian for Taiwan.

The best Korean dramas and actors were also awarded during the ceremony.

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry win big at MTV awards

Pop star Lady Gaga picked up two awards and Katy Perry won three, including video of the year. But it was Beyonce showing off her new baby bump that stole the show at MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The MTV VMAs annually turn up the volume on surprises and outrageous acts by the world's top singers and bands. Last year it was Lady Gaga's meat dress and the year before the Kanye West and Taylor Swift speech mishap. But nobody saw Beyonce's pregnancy coming -- except her husband Jay-Z.

Beyonce, whose hits include "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," first appeared on the red carpet, posed for photographers and used her arms to outline the baby bump her long gown.

She later performed her song "Love On Top," telling the audience to stand up and saying, "I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me." At the end, she took off her jacket, smiled broadly and rubbed her tummy.

In the audience, Jay-Z was congratulated by Kanye West and he gave Beyonce a big wave. On Twitter, one ardent fan had already started an account, http://twitter.com/#/BeyJayFetus, and it had more than 900 followers.

Lady Gaga opened the VMAs singing her song "You and I" and dressed in drag as her male alter ego, Joe Calderone. She stayed in the fictional character throughout the program and accepted awards for best female video and best message video for her song, "Born This Way."

"I feel so blessed to be here," Lady Gaga said onstage, holding the MTV moonman statuette for best female performer. "It doesn't matter how you are -- gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgendered -- you were born this way."

The other big winner of the night was Katy Perry. who took home video of the year, the night's top prize, with her triumphant song and video for "Firework."

She also picked up best collaboration for "E.T." featuring Kanye West, and a minor trophy for special effects with "E.T."

Perry, who is known for cute and colorful costumes accepted her award with a cube-shaped hat on her head.

"I'm very proud of the song, she said. "I feel like I am doing something right when I sing (it)."

Other awards went to Justin Bieber for best male video with "U Smile," and Tyler, The Creator took home the MTV moonman for best new artist with "Yonkers."

Britney Spears earned the honor of having the best pop video with "Till the World Ends." She was also given the special honor of the Michael Jackson video vanguard award.

Foo Fighters nabbed best rock video and Nicki Minaj, in a bright dress she said was inspired by Tokyo and its Harajuku district, took best hip-hop video for "Super Bass."

Shut out of the top awards was British singer Adele, who has been topping charts for weeks with her hit album "21" and its singles including "Rolling in the Deep." But "Rolling" did manage to earn awards in minor categories of art direction, cinematography, and editing.

Highlights included a duet by Jay-Z and Kanye West, singing a song from their new album, "Watch the Throne," and Lil Wayne closed the program in advance of his new album's release.

Legendary soul singer Tony Bennett and pop star Bruno Mars took part in a tribute to the late soul singer Amy Winehouse, who recently died. Bennett said some people just have talent and others don't.

GMA-7 WON but declined to accept the award as Best Corporate Website by the Catholic Mass Media Awards

GMA-7 Cebu won the Best Corporate Website category by the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) last night but declined the award, saying they have yet to launch the website.

Albert Aballe, editor of the website, said they had not yet launched the awarded site since it is still under testing stage.

“It should not be awarded because we had not gone public yet. Its still under construction,” Aballe said.

He said they were notified of the nomination even if they didn’t apply for the category.

Aballe said he told CAMMA organizers that they would decline the nomination.

“I thought they understood it. I was very surprised when they told me that it won,” he said.

Aballe said they would still keep the site as a secret since it wasn’t officially launched.

Teoddie Dumam-ag, CAMMA chairperson and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of San Jose Recoletos, said he never saw the website himself.

He said they didn’t receive any reply from GMA declining the nomination.

The jurors of the corporate website category were representatives from the Cebu Normal University, USJR and other selected organizations.

Dumam-ag said he also sent a text message to GMA finalizing the nomination but he did not receive a reply.

During last night’s awarding ceremony, Dumam-ag said he received a text from Aballe saying that they would decline the award.

“Aballe’s not the authorized person to return it,” he said.

Dumam-ag said the event won’t have any negative effect on the CAMMA awarding committee.

“We provide the avenue to recognize the values espoused by the Commission,” he said.

Other CAMMA winners include Luis Quibranza of Sun.Star for Best English feature and Sun.Star’s Justin K. Vestil for Best English News. Best English Column went to Fr. Roy Cimagala of The Freeman.

Best TV news program went to TV Patrol Central Visayas of ABS-CBN Cebu while DYHP bagged the best news program for radio. Reporter Candeze R. Mongaya

PBA: Alapag bags MVP honors, Al-Hussaini is Rookie of the Year

One of the smallest men in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) proved to be the biggest for this season.

Talk `N Text playmaker Jimmy Alapag had his crowning glory Sunday night when he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of Asia’s pioneering pro league during the annual Leo Awards at the Araneta Coliseum, besting Petron’s Arwind Santos and the popular Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra.

Considered as the heart-and-soul of the Tropang Texters, Alapag played a key role in getting the telecommunication franchise to where it is at the moment – a title removed from completing a historic Grand Slam.

And while his team may be on track to achieving the rare honor, Alapag already basked in the glory ahead of the rest of the Tropang Texters.

Only the fifth point guard to win the MVP trophy, Alapag said he never once thought of bagging the award ever since he learned the rudiments of the sport.

“Ever since I’ve been playing basketball, I’ve never gone before the start of the season working hard to win an MVP," said the player known as the `Mighty Mouse’. “It’s always about winning championships. If I ever was blessed, it was a huge honor.

“It’s been a special year. The journey isn’t quite done yet."

Commissioner Chito Salud and chairman Rene Pardo awarded the MVP trophy to Alapag, who followed Robert Jaworski Sr, Ricky Brown, Johnny Abarrientos and Jay-Jay Helterbrand as only the fifth playmaker to win the award.

The Talk `N Text veteran offered the award in behalf of his team’s coaching staff, teammates, family and wife, actress LJ Moreno.

Alapag compiled 1,888 points to bag the league’s highest individual title, winning over Santos, the Best Player of the Governors Cup (1,687) and Caguioa (1,317).

The three of them also comprised the Mythical team together with Alaska’s Sonny Thoss and Alapag’s Talk `N Text teammate Kelly Williams.

Another Talk `N Text stalwart in Jason Castro leads the second Mythical Team, along with teammate Ali Peek, B-Meg’s James Yap and Joe Devance, and Jay Washington, the Best Player of the Conference in the Philippine Cup, of Petron.

As expected, Rabeh Al-Hussaini was the hands down choice as the Rookie of the Year.

Santos led the All-Defensive unit along with Marc Pingris of B-Meg and Ryan Reyes of Talk ‘N Text. But the selection of Ginebra’s Willie Wilson and John Wilson surprised a lot of people as the two beat out perennial All-Defensive members Williams and Thoss.
