Will Samsung thwart iPhone 5 release?

GMA NEWS:

Will Korea's Samsung Electronics spoil the long-awaited coming-out party of Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5, at least in Korea?

A report on The Korea Times cited sources who said Samsung may cite patent issues in seeking a sales ban on the new iPhone.

"Just after the arrival of the iPhone 5 here, Samsung plans to take Apple to court here for its violation of Samsung’s wireless technology related patents," The Korea Times quoted a senior executive from Samsung Electronics, who asked not to be named.

But the report said the executive's remarks contrast with Samsung’s approach of not entering into a dogfight with Apple.

Apple earlier brought up patent issues with Samsung’s Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets.

But Samsung claimed Apple’s iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 violate seven patents related to its wireless technology.

The Korea Times report said at least 23 lawsuits are pending between Apple and Samsung in such countries as France, Japan, Germany, Korea and the United States.

"For as long as Apple does not drop mobile telecommunications functions, it would be impossible for it to sell its i-branded products without using our patents. We will stick to a strong stance against Apple during the lingering legal fights," the executive said.

Affected telecom firms

If Samsung manages to suspend the latest iPhone, it could affect SK Telecom and KT, Korea's top two mobile carriers authorized to sell iPhones.

KT spokesman Lee In-won said KT will pay attention to the ongoing patent battles, while SK Telecom spokeswoman Kim Ji-won made no comment.

KT and SK Telecom have sold some 2.7 million and 400,000 iPhones in the local market, respectively.

Samsung's client

Apple is one of Samsung's major clients as many of its i-products use Samsung flash memories.

Upcoming iPhone specs

The upcoming iPhone uses LG Display’s liquid crystal display (LCD), Samsung’s NAND flash memories and application processors (APs) and LG Innotek's camera modules. It is also likely to have an 8-megapixel camera and an A5 dual-core processor.

Yet, the report said there are chances that the standoff between Samsung and Apple may ease as Samsung is reluctant to make an enemy of Apple.

GMA News TV International: Included in Top 20 Channels in Guam; well received in Australia

GMA NEWS:

An overwhelming number of feedbacks have greeted GMA News TV International a few weeks after it went on-air in Australia and Guam, showing that it not only delivers timely, comprehensive local news and encompassing public affairs programs from the Philippines, but also proves that it is indeed the answer to the Filipinos’ hunger for an all-news Pinoy channel.

GMA News TV International, a 24-hour channel, was born out of GMA Network’s desire to answer the global Filipinos’ yearning for the latest news and issues in the Philippines. It is backed by the most trusted, most credible, and most awarded broadcast news organization in the Philippines – GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs team.

Bringing to Filipinos worldwide this news, public affairs, and documentary channel that uses the Filipino language has brought in positive feedbacks as shared by GMA News International’s affiliates in Australia and Guam.

“GMA Network, with its three international channels GMA News TV International, GMA Pinoy TV, and GMA Life TV, offers Filipinos good value, unique, and high quality Pinoy programming. We believe the addition of the GMA News TV International channel will continue to strengthen the appeal of Fetch TV to Australia’s Filipino population," says Scott Lorson, CEO of Australia’s Fetch TV.

In Guam, GMA News TV International has been among the top 20 channels since it was first viewed on GTA’s GUdTV on July 8.

“GMA News TV International is doing very well here in Guam as many of GTA’s Filipino market base have shown overwhelming interest in adding it to their channel lineup. Like GMA Pinoy TV, it’s been consistently landing a spot in the top 20 channels due to its significant daily viewership. This only proves that GMA News TV International meets the Filipino community’s demand for programming content that’s unique from the rest," says Karen Gayle, product and content manager of GUdTV.

According to Joseph T. Francia, vice president and head of operations for GMA International, the warm reception to GMA News TV International was enough reward for the network’s move to give what Filipinos abroad have all been asking for – a GMA-branded channel that’s dedicated to news from the Philippines.

“We are encouraged by the very positive response to GMA News TV International. Apart from Australia and Guam, we also recently launched GMA News TV International in Japan, where the channel is now on test broadcast through our affiliate Access TV. We are committed to bringing the channel to even more parts of the globe in the coming months. " he says. - KBK

GMA 7’s Philippine Treasures, inirekomenda ng DepEd

GMA NEWS:

“The GMA News and Public Affairs Department announces the showing of a special feature on the country’s historical artifacts – Philippine Treasures hosted by Ms. Mel Tiangco. This is set to air on September 11, 2011, Sunday, at 10:30 p.m. This production aspires to rekindle the Filipinos’ interest on the Philippines’ rich culture and colorful history," nakasaad sa kautusan na may petsang Sept. 8.

Sa pamamagitan ng dokumentaryo, inaasahang lalong mamumulat ang isipan ng mga manonood kung gaano kayaman ang kultura ng lahing Pilipino na dapat nating protektahan. - FRJimenez, GMA News

GMA-7 docu 'Philippine Treasures' to explore the history that inspired Amaya

GMA NEWS:

When 24 Oras news anchor Mel Tiangco came face to face with the Golden Tara, considered by some experts as one of the most spectacular finds in Philippine archeology, she was intrigued. Was it worth going all the way to Chicago, USA to see?

“She was very small!" Tiangco told GMA News Online about the statue, showing its height with her thumb and index finger. “I thought, ‘What's spectacular about this thing?’"

But the Golden Tara grew on her after she spent a few moments with it. She said she couldn't help but be entranced by the object's “serenity."

Depicting the image of a Vajryana Buddhism deity, the Golden Tara now resides in the Field Museum in Chicago, USA, far from Agusan del Sur where it was originally found. Image screencapped from Philippine Treasures

Then you fall in love with her," said Tiangco. “The more you look at her, the more she becomes beautiful."

The 5-inch-tall golden statue shares the section with precious gems and diamonds. But since it’s displayed miles away from Agusan del Sur, where it was found, few Filipinos get to witness the item's beauty.

This Sunday night, however, viewers will be treated not only to the sight of the Golden Tara from its current home at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, but also to stories of other intriguing historical finds from all over the country.

GMA News and Public Affairs will air ‘Philippine Treasures," a special documentary about some of the most important relics from the Philippines’ literally rich pre-colonial past. The documentary is hosted by Mel Tiangco, with reporting by Mariz Umali, Cesar Apolinario, Tina Panganiban-Perez, and John Consulta.

Program Manager Lee Joseph Castel said that he got the idea for the documentary after a spontaneous trip to the National Museum.

“Na-fascinate ako masyado sa mga artifacts doon, so naisip ko parang wala pang gumagawa ng special tungkol sa historical artifacts dito sa Pilipinas," Castel told GMA News Online. He also shared that the National Museum itself is also suffering from the lack of funds.

Motivated to change the perception that Filipinos lack a sense of history, the production staff withstood long journeys and heavy rains, and even braved rebel-infested areas, in search of the country’s almost-forgotten treasures.

'9/11 The Day the World Changed' Back to Back with 'The Death of Bin Laden'

iGMA:

September 11, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack that shook the world.

GMA News TV commemorates the tragedy with a back-to-back airing of two powerful documentaries by the BBC: "9/11 The Day the World Changed" and "The Death of Bin Laden". GMA has the exclusive right to broadcast these in the Philippines.

With narration dubbed in Filipino to reach a wider audience, this 2½-hour back- to-back special gives viewers inside stories on the 9/11 attack and the eventual death of its mastermind. Catch them Sunday night, September 11, from 8 to 10:30 pm on GMA News TV Channel 11.

9/11 THE DAY THE WORLD CHANGED: 8-10 PM, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

"9/11 The Day the World Changed" takes viewers back to the morning of September 11, 2001 when attacks on the United States killed nearly 3,000 people from over 70 countries. The world watched in terror as hijacked passenger planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and an open field in Pennsylvania. This documentary reveals the decisive moments of 9/11. Going behind the scenes, it shows how the events unfurled in the aircraft, the offices, the bunkers and the military headquarters as the US President, his advisers, security services and the military tried to piece together what was happening, who was attacking America and what was going to happen next.

THE DEATH OF BIN LADEN: 10-10:30 PM, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

"The Death of Bin Laden" shows how America tracked down and killed the world's most wanted man - Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda's leader and mastermind of the 9/11 attack. Despite the $25M bounty on his head, Bin Laden evaded the forces of the United States and its allies for almost a decade. From accounts of eyewitnesses, victims of Al Qaeda's terror, and military and intelligence insiders, the documentary traces the events that led to the US Special Forces' raid of the hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan where Bin Laden was killed last May 2, 2011. -- Text and photos courtesy of GMA Network

TV Patrol: Anchors links to politics; Peddling cheap shots; sounding almost like pontificating

PHIL STAR:

It didn’t surprise your Chair Wrecker that 24 ORAS of GMA Network had out rated TV Patrol of ABS-CBN in the recent August Mega Manila ratings poll. TV Patrol has been dishing a lot of cheap shots lately that could turn off a lot of viewers.

This questionable feature on TV Patrol is that text poll that they’re running every episode — a poll that the network admits isn’t scientific. The TV Patrol poll cannot claim to represent the national sentiment. You don’t need to be a genius to forecast who’ll end up the winner and the loser, the good guy and the bad guy and the hero and the heel in those TV Patrol polls. You’ll wonder if there’s a hidden agenda somewhere. In some instances, the news report preceding the poll question appears slanted to condition the public how to vote.

No doubt, the ABS-CBN management had banked on the popularity of Noli de Castro, Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon when they revamped the news program and injected the three veterans as anchors. A veteran Advertising Media Analyst thinks that the network may have overlooked a common denominator that their three anchors share which could be eroding their credibility. Noli, Korina and Ted are all associated or have been associated with politics. Noli and Ted have been elected public officials while Korina is married to a politician.

The same Advertising Media Analyst also noted a difference between 24 ORAS and TV Patrol reporting. Per our resource person, TV Patrol is sounding almost like pontificating instead of just telling it like it is. You see none of that in 24 ORAS. There is also too much of this “patting ABS-CBN in the back” in TV Patrol. The news managers of ABS-CBN may not be noticing these but the viewers do.

Cheap shots that proliferate in media, especially radio and television, have led the public mind to think the wrong way. In the more developed countries, media would challenge and question the assertions of persons that are deemed untruthful or slanted. Untruthful and obviously slanted assertions are hardly challenged here and that leads the public to believe the lies and half-truths.

To divert public attention from the many atrocities committed during her term that are now emerging, the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) camp has resorted to appealing to emotions. Why is this not being challenged?

Untruthful and obviously slanted assertions are hardly challenged here and that leads the public to believe the lies and half-truths.

To divert public attention from the many atrocities committed during her term that are now emerging, the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA) camp has resorted to appealing to emotions. Why is this not being challenged?

Spoilers don't ruin stories or films: study

GMA NEWS:

If you are angry that someone spoiled the plot of a movie or revealed the ending of a book, don't be.

A new study by researchers from the University of California at San Diego shows spoilers may enhance enjoyment, even for suspense-driven story lines and film plots.

After studying three types of stories -- ironic-twist, mystery and literary -- by authors such as John Updike, Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie, they found readers preferred versions with a spoiling paragraph written into the story.

"I was quite surprised by the results," researcher Nicholas Christenfeld said in an interview. "Like most people, I don't turn to the end of a book to see who dies or what happens."

For the study each story was read by up to 30 people and presented in two formats -- in the original version and with a spoiling paragraph inserted in the story.

Readers of all three story types preferred the spoiled versions of the stories more than the unspoiled originals.

"Plots are just excuses for great writing," Christenfeld explained. "Nonetheless, plots are important, like a skeleton or a coat hanger. You need it to display the things that are important but the plot itself isn't critical."

Christenfeld said in many cases a book or movie can be re-read or seen multiple times and still be enjoyable.

"As a film director, your job isn't really to come to the conclusion that the butler did it. A single line would do that," he said.

Once viewers know the ending of a film, they may want to view if again to see things that had meaning or didn't have meaning the first time they saw it.

The researchers said in the study, which will be published in the journal Psychological Science, they found that the success of entertainment does not rest on suspense alone.

"Stories are a universal element of human culture, the backbone of the billion-dollar entertainment industry, and the medium through which religion and societal values are transmitted," they wrote in the report.

Christenfeld and his co-author Jonathan Leavitt added that the findings could mean that commonly held perceptions about suspense may also be incorrect.

"Perhaps," they said in the study, "birthday presents are better when wrapped in cellophane and engagement rings are better when not concealed in chocolate mousse." - Reuters

Stock Exchange: ABS-CBN removed from blue chip index

GMA NEWS:

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) announced that five companies will be joining its roster of blue chip firms under the PSE index or PSEi effective September 12.

As a result of its latest review covering trading activity from July 2010 to June 2011, the PSE said the five new companies that will become part of PSEi are Belle Corp., Cebu Air Inc., San Miguel Corp., Semirara Mining Corp. and SM Development Corp.

These companies will replace ABS-CBN Corp., Filinvest Land Inc., First Philippine Holdings Corp., Lepanto Consolidated Mining Co. and Security Bank Corp..

The PSEi consists of the country’s 30 most traded, most liquid and well-capitalized listed firms.

“With the revisions in calculating our index, we hope to boost liquidity which is one of the stock market’s biggest challenges. The changes reflect our intention to adopt global best practices," Hans B. Sicat, PSE president and chief executive officer said.

The Exchange is effecting this September a change in the policy on calculating its main index, the PSEi. Revisions to the criteria for a company’s inclusion in the PSEi include, among others, a higher public float requirement of 12 percent from the previous 10 percent, and improved measurements in determining liquidity and market capitalization.
