Aljur Abrenica rumored to be Marian Rivera's next leading man in Amaya

PEP:

"Naging sobrang busy, sobrang daming ginagawa. So, itong event na ito, ginawa rin para makapag-pasalamat kami sa mga fans."

ONLY GUEST. Hindi naman maikakaila that something special was going on between Aljur and Kylie Padilla.

"Hindi, biro lang... actually, 'Getting to Know Each Other.'"

MARIAN'S NEXT LEADING MAN?

GMA-7 docu 'Philippine Treasures' to explore the history that inspired Amaya

GMA NEWS:

When 24 Oras news anchor Mel Tiangco came face to face with the Golden Tara, considered by some experts as one of the most spectacular finds in Philippine archeology, she was intrigued. Was it worth going all the way to Chicago, USA to see?

“She was very small!" Tiangco told GMA News Online about the statue, showing its height with her thumb and index finger. “I thought, ‘What's spectacular about this thing?’"

But the Golden Tara grew on her after she spent a few moments with it. She said she couldn't help but be entranced by the object's “serenity."

Depicting the image of a Vajryana Buddhism deity, the Golden Tara now resides in the Field Museum in Chicago, USA, far from Agusan del Sur where it was originally found. Image screencapped from Philippine Treasures

Then you fall in love with her," said Tiangco. “The more you look at her, the more she becomes beautiful."

The 5-inch-tall golden statue shares the section with precious gems and diamonds. But since it’s displayed miles away from Agusan del Sur, where it was found, few Filipinos get to witness the item's beauty.

This Sunday night, however, viewers will be treated not only to the sight of the Golden Tara from its current home at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, but also to stories of other intriguing historical finds from all over the country.

GMA News and Public Affairs will air ‘Philippine Treasures," a special documentary about some of the most important relics from the Philippines’ literally rich pre-colonial past. The documentary is hosted by Mel Tiangco, with reporting by Mariz Umali, Cesar Apolinario, Tina Panganiban-Perez, and John Consulta.

Program Manager Lee Joseph Castel said that he got the idea for the documentary after a spontaneous trip to the National Museum.

“Na-fascinate ako masyado sa mga artifacts doon, so naisip ko parang wala pang gumagawa ng special tungkol sa historical artifacts dito sa Pilipinas," Castel told GMA News Online. He also shared that the National Museum itself is also suffering from the lack of funds.

Motivated to change the perception that Filipinos lack a sense of history, the production staff withstood long journeys and heavy rains, and even braved rebel-infested areas, in search of the country’s almost-forgotten treasures.

After epic-serye 'Amaya,' enter 'Hinilawod'

Amaya-fied: The producers behind an indigenous play with music, “Hinilawod,” are, in a way, thankful that TV, specifically, GMA Network, has contributed to the renewed interest in Filipinos’ pre-Hispanic culture.

They’re not saying, however, which one between “Amaya” and “Hinilawod” is more historically accurate. An award-winning film director, on the other hand, swears by “Amaya’s” fine-tuning of Philippine history and its interesting take on such an unknown period from our past.

Elwood Perez, director of such award-winning classics as “Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit” and “Ang Totoong Buhay ni Pacita M.,” says he appreciates the epic-serye’s stylized rendition of the country’s pre-Hispanic past, lavishing praise for its beautiful costumes and impeccable production design.

Epic Proportions: Events organizer Evelyn Yoro chanced upon an existing production of “Hinilawod” on a trip to Dumaguete in 2010.

The two-hour play, staged at the Luce Theater at the city’s Siliman University, so impressed Ms. Yoro, who decided right then and there to bring the production to Manila.

“Hinilawod,” an oral epic of Filipino indigenous peoples inhabiting Panay Island before the coming of the Spaniards, is believed to be one of the longest known epics.

Based on an actual 1955 research by famous Filipino historian and anthropologist F. Landa Jocano, it is composed of 28,340 verses, far longer than the “Iliad,” which has only 15,700 verses.

Jocano, then a college student collecting folk songs and stories from his native Iloilo, recorded an actual 30-hour recitation of the “Hinilawod” by a babaylan. The recording, held at a public market in Lambunao, served as basis of the entire production.

“Hinilawod” is described as a monumental saga of heroes, villains, gods and monsters, rivaling the likes of “Iliad” and “Odyssey.”

Cultural Treasure: This Philippine cultural treasure has been revived and recently performed in a series of shows and re-runs by a group of art and culture visionaries, “Hiyas Kayumanggi,” in Dumaguete City, where it was very well-received.

The same show will be presented at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP Main Theatre) on September 3 and 4. It has a cast and crew of 70 singers, actors, dancers, and production personnel.

While 45 crew members will be flown in from Dumaguete, an entourage of 20 dancers from the Batangan Dance Company of Batangas has been tapped to take over the dancing roles.

In preparation for the Manila staging, the “Hinilawod” cast recently underwent a three-day training and workshop under acclaimed West End performers Robert Seña and Isay Alvarez.

During a press lunch to announce the coming of “Hinilawod,” the “Miss Saigon” veterans admitted they were held in awe by the theatrical and cultural splendor of the material. Alvarez said the “Hinilawod” could be a cultural landmark show that might well be our answer to such cultural presentations as the Rama Hari in Indonesia and the water puppets of Vietnam.

The Manila performance is made possible by Creative Futures, Inc., a team of professionals venturing in out-of-the-box projects. Prior to the Manila performance, the “Hinilawod” will be re-staged at Siliman University on August 23 and 24.

New Time-slot: Amaya's place in the ratings race

These days, it's not that easy to determine the pulse of the people as far as TV ratings are concerned.

The Kapamilya viewers would always say ABS-CBN shows are beating the rival shows.

Likewise, the Kapuso fans would claim their favorite GMA-7 programs are winning in terms of viewership.

On May 30, the well-publicized and much-anticipated Amaya aired its pilot episode.

According to AGB Nielsen Mega Manila, it generated 26.2 percent in the Household ratings and 14.3 percent in the People ratings. It landed second to Channel 2's Mara Clara.

Meanwhile, the household ratings of Kantar Media-TNS National was saying another thing—the Marian Rivera-starred epic series topped all Channel 7 shows, but placed sixth overall.

"Ano ba ang totoo?" some of the PEPsters asked.

While the numbers are primarily for the advertisers, it has now become a benchmark for fans on the star power of their idols.

It has also served as a pasttime for the couch potatoes and Netizens.

The minute both TV giants release their respective data, the comments section of PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) would start getting crowded, and sometimes flooded.

In the case of Marian's epic series, her fans have been busy posting praises for the show, and her detractors, calling it "Flop."

A week later, the June 7-9 results of AGB Nielsen Mega Manila announced that the binukot princess snatched the crown. In the Kantar Media-TNS National, however, it clung to its 6th spot.

Will Amaya maintain its lead? Will it ever overtake ABS-CBN's TV series?

Two poll results in PEP.ph have been in favor of Marian.

Out of 1, 284 PEPsters, 65.65% said they will watch Amaya.

In the current one, 63.87% agreed that the 26-year-old actress is worthy of the "Primetime Queen" tag, out of 584 PEPsters.

There's no doubt about Marian's popularity, but her continued success in the ratings race has yet to be determined.

One certain thing: The people can spot what's good or not good.
