GMA Pinoy TV Launches “Power ng Pinoy” this September

A new weekly television show that will introduce and salute successful Filipino individuals, groups and corporations will be launched on September 2011 and shown every Sunday nights thereafter through GMA Pinoy TV.

Dubbed Power ng Pinoy, the weekly 30-minute documentary program will feature Filipino shakers and movers that made and continue to make a difference in the lives of Filipinos in the U.S. and in the Philippines.

It will also feature entertaining side stories that would strengthen and further solidify the bond of the Filipino community in general.

Power ng Pinoy seeks to empower and provide inspiration to fellow Filipinos in their continuous perseverance and sacrifice to realize their American dream while educating viewers on some of our history’s significant achievers and greatest treasures.

A unique and valuable highlight of the show is its primary emphasis on how featured guests give back to the community as it strongly believes that true success is not only about achieving one’s goals and dreams but also about sharing what one achieves with the society in general and the Filipino community in particular.

For its pilot episode, Power ng Pinoy is slated to present the humble beginnings of Dado Banatao, who was born to a rice farmer and housekeeper in small barrio in Cagayan Valley, where he used to walk barefoot to school in dirt roads and, because of hard work and dedication, is now a veteran entrepreneur and venture capitalist in the Silicon Valley, California.

Others in the line-up of featured stories include ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” perennial champion Cheryl Burke, the FAA-certified armless Filipina pilot Jessica Cox, Gawad Kalinga board member Joe Millares, the first Filipino UC Berkeley Professor Ben de Lumen, Milpitas, California City Mayor Jose Estevez and “Project Runway” finalist Jay Sario, among others.

'Anti-Planking Law' raises eyebrows online

A bill was filed at the House of Representatives on Tuesday against planking —or the act of lying face down in unusual locations — during street protests.

Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo, who filed the measure, said planking during street rallies became an “important concern" after some youth protesters lay face down along España Boulevard in Manila to support the transport strike on Monday.

In a statement, the lawmaker said the government should come up with a code of student conduct for “militant or radical student leaders engaged in street protests or demonstration."

The code of conduct should be drafted and implemented by the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education, he added.

Castelo’s bill will have to undergo committee and plenary discussions and approvals at the lower chamber, as well as the Senate, before it can be enacted into law.

“The parent in me tells me that this precedent… could just be very dangerous in the future. Life and limb are pretty much at risk here," he said.

“Parents and teachers have reason to be alarmed… The Filipino psyche of our young children in school is under attack—right here and now," he said.

“Unbelieving bus drivers and law enforcement authorities might just ram through these warm and living bodies rolled out on highways," he added.

Proposals to outlaw planking were also raised in Australia last May after a man died after falling from a building while planking.

Police take steps vs. planking

Earlier on Tuesday, the Manila Police District (MPD) said it may break up “planking" sessions and detain those engaged in the act especially if they pose a danger to others, radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo reported.

On Monday, about 30 youths from the League of Filipino Students (LFS) and Anakbayan staged "planking sessions" to show support for the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operaor Nationwide (PISTON) drivers who were holding a nationwide transport strike to protest rising prices of fuel.

The police did not move against the militants as they were under instructions to observe “maximum tolerance" in dealing with protesters.

Philippines to host Miss Universe 2013 !?

Panama has declined to stage the 2013 Miss Universe contest, two months after it was announced that the project is almost a done-deal between the government and the pageant organizers.

Reports also said the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) and ABS-CBN, new home of the BPCI, may soon bid for the staging of the world’s most prestigious beauty pageant in the Philippines.

If the Philippines wins the bid, it would be the third time for the Miss Universe pageant to be held in the country. It was first held in the country in 1974 when Miss Spain Amparo Munoz won the title. This was followed in 1994 when Miss India Sushmita Sen was crowned.

2011 Miss Universe 3rd runner up Shamcey Supsup earlier said she would love the Miss Universe pageant to be staged in the country “to show to the world what the Philippines can offer.’’

Panama said the $12 million budget for the holding of the beauty pageant would be too much, adding that they could not afford to stage the contest at this point, according to the website Global Beauties as reported in the Panama newspaper Mi Diario.

Salo Shamah, head of Panama’s Tourism Administration, confirmed that the Miss Universe Organization and the national government had met on several occasions to discuss the project.

But last week, Panama President Ricardo Martinelli decided that they could not afford the staging of the beauty pageant.

“We don’t even have $12 million for our annual advertising project,’’ Shamah said. “Even if private companies were able to fund half the money that is needed, it is still a big hit to our government budget.’’

Authorities also said that the few minutes of telecast of the country’s top destinations are not worth it because most of the viewers are from Asia “who have no direct flights to our country.’’

Panama recently made a good standing in the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil when its contestant Sheldry Saez placed among the Top 10 semifinalists and won the Best National Costume award. Panama staged the Miss Universe beauty pageant twice – in 1986 and 2003.

Lolong: New World Record for largest crocodile captured

A 21-foot (6.4m) long crocodile weighing one tonne (1,075 kg), suspected of attacking several people has been caught in the Philippines - setting the new world record for the Largest crocodile captured, according to World Records Academy (www.worldrecordsacademy.org).

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the First plane crash caused by a crocodile: the crash of a Filair internal flight in DR Congo, which killed 20 passengers and crew, was caused by a crocodile smuggled on-board by a passenger. The Czech-made Let 410 was travelling from Kinshasa to Bandundu on 25 August 2010 when the escaped crocodile caused panicking passengers to rush the cockpit, unbalancing the plane. It crashed into a house close to its final destination. The crocodile was among the only two passengers to survive the crash.

Local residents had been fearful of crocodile attacks since a fisherman and young girl had gone missing over the past year.

It took three weeks to hunt down the giant crocodile and nearly 100 people to take it out of the water.

It twice broke from restraining ropes before it was properly secured and it became extremely "aggressive" several times.

The crocodile was named "Lolong," after one of its captors Ernesto "Lolong" Conate, a Palawan-based crocodile hunter who was part of the team that helped captured the gigantic crocodile but died from heart attack at the course of their mission.

The World's Largest Crocodile Captured, named Lolong after a wildlife expert who died of a stroke during the two-week hunt for the buffalo-killer, will live in a cage to be built in Barangay Consuelo in Bunawan, Agusan del Sur.

Local officials who will care for Lolong will be aided by a team from the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB).

He's currently living in temporary dwellings in the village of Consuelo, where the nature park is temporarily closed to help Lolong adjust to his new environment.

The Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) will be coming up with a set of rules and regulations for the proposed public viewing of the biggest crocodile in captivity, noting that the gigantic animal should also be treated with respect.

"If there would be a lot of people who would go and view the crocodile, then we should send them a strong message that the crocodile should also be treated with respect," PAWB Director Dr. Theresa Mundita Lim said.

"We have to treat them with respect. These are very ancient animals that are important to the ecosystem," she added.

Castelo says the bill will not change the number of working hours required in a week; instead, the schedule will just be rearranged. “There won’t be any reduction in the required 40 hours of work every week or any cutback in services or productivity,” he is quoted as saying.

This will save the government and private sectors at least P20 billion a week, he adds, with both workers and companies reaping financial benefits. For example, he says, a Metro Manila employee who spends P200 a day for expenses like transport and food can save P200 a week. Meanwhile, employers’ maintenance and production costs will also decrease.

Rep. Castelo is set to file the bill within the week. He mentions how the House of Representatives already adopts this sort of schedule with considerable savings for the government.

Smoking kills 10 Filipinos every hour

Ten Filipinos die every hour from illnesses caused by smoking while the country loses nearly 500 billion pesos (US$11.5 billion) annually from healthcare costs and productivity losses, according to an anti-tobacco group.

Philippines disputed the claims of tobacco companies that increasing taxes on tobacco would hurt tobacco farmers and lead to the loss of livelihood.

"The most important issue is none other than health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that tobacco consumption kills 10 Filipinos every hour, due to cancer, stroke, lung and heart diseases brought on by cigarette smoking," the group said in a statement.

"Even if a person does not smoke, the WHO warns that second-hand smoke causes hundreds of thousands of deaths to non-smokers due to the same smoking-related diseases," it said.

The Philippines loses billions of pesos in terms of health and economic costs from smoking.

It cited a 2006 study by the WHO, Department of Health (DOH), University of the Philippines-Manila and the Philippine College of Medical Researchers Foundation showing that the government's "economic costs, including expenses for health care and costs of productivity losses," reached 461 billion pesos.

The group said price increases through tax reforms in tobacco products will discourage people from smoking.

It quoted a World Bank study as saying that a 10 percent increase in taxes on tobacco products would lead to a 4 to 8 percent decrease in consumption, thus leading to saving thousands of lives.

"A recent study by economists Filomeno Sta. Ana and Jo-Ann Latuja estimates that at least 870,000 smokers will quit and 310,000 lives can be saved when the needed excise tax reforms, which will significantly increase the price of cigarettes, are implemented," HealthJustice said.

The tax reforms would also help raise additional revenues for public health, with the Department of Finance estimating that as much as 30 billion pesos to 40 billion pesos additional revenues can be generated annually, it said.

The group said the 2009 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) has estimated that more than 17 million adult Filipinos smoke while a DOH survey showed that Filipino children as young as five years old are already starting to smoke.

"If the current administration falls short of implementing measures to reduce tobacco consumption among its citizens, the health risks and economic losses will certainly become too much to bear in the near future," the group said.

Korean Film Festival Presents '7 Different Colors of Love'

The seven films that will be shown in the 2011 Korean Film Festival in the Philippines are:

“SECRET REUNION” (Starring: Kang Dong Won, Song Kang Ho). Song Kang-ho, an ex-agent of the National Intelligence Service who is very careful about his actions, is paired with Kang Dong-won, a former spy from the North.

Song’s character was released from the NIS six years after the gunfight which happened in the heart of Seoul; however, both men keep their identities hidden from each other.

“SCANDAL MAKER” – (Starring: Cha Tae Hyun, Park Bo Young, Wang Suk Hyun) - Nam Hyun Soo was a very famous idol worshipped like God by teens. Korean Film Festival Presents '7 Different Colors of Love'

The seven films that will be shown in the 2011 Korean Film Festival in the Philippines are:

“SECRET REUNION” (Starring: Kang Dong Won, Song Kang Ho). Song Kang-ho, an ex-agent of the National Intelligence Service who is very careful about his actions, is paired with Kang Dong-won, a former spy from the North.

Song’s character was released from the NIS six years after the gunfight which happened in the heart of Seoul; however, both men keep their identities hidden from each other.

“SCANDAL MAKER” – (Starring: Cha Tae Hyun, Park Bo Young, Wang Suk Hyun) - Nam Hyun Soo was a very famous idol worshipped like God by teens. Though he is in his mid-thirties now, he is still one of the most sought-after celebrity in the industry and a DJ in a radio show. Idol mania hits Manila

We laughed, cried and cheered for them. Fresh from their American tour, the American Idol (AI) Season 10 finalists arrived yesterday for a two-night concert on Sept. 20 to 21 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The lives of Casey Abrams, Haley Reihart, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, runner-up Lauren Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Stefano Langone, Thia Megia and winner Scotty McCreery have definitely changed since appearing on the show. They are excited to come to Manila, the only Asian city included in the tour.

“Just arriving here is beautiful and the food is amazing,” Pia said at the Manila Hotel presscon held yesterday.

“I haven’t been here since I was four,” added Thia, whose parents hailed from Pampanga. “It’s really lovely to be back with my mom and I promised her that one day I would eventually take her but I didn’t expect it so soon. I’m just really looking forward to learn more about the importance of my culture and seeing my roots,” she said.

“We heard more that the Philippines would be special and we’re looking forward to getting out,” said Scotty.

The Idol finalists are happy to see and hear the support of their Filipino fans. “There were a lot of people lining up and waiting outside (of the airport),” shared Naima.

Jacob said, on the other hand, they also look forward to go around the city, try the food and shop.

Asked how is it like making a name in the music scene, Lauren replied, “I feel like everyone is his own artist. I don’t think James (Durbin) is scared to be like the rock field because Kurt is there because they have been successful. I feel like it doesn’t really matter.”

For Scotty, life is never the same again since winning AI’s 10th season. “I have been living in an adult world now for the last couple of months. With that transition, life has taken a 180 thing so I’m just trying to adjust. For my hometown, I’m still the same Scotty. But out of my hometown, it’s a different thing.”

Scotty also admits that he has huge shoes to fill with Carrie Underwood’s win in Season Four. “It’s a whole lot different for all of us,” he said. “This is a new thing not only for Idol but for the country music world. There has never been a country music male and there’s no formula for that. So it’s a cool thing and a scary thing.” Scotty’s single I Love You This Big is topping the charts.

Gwendolyn Ruais wins 1st Miss World Philippines

Gwendolyn Ruais (Candidate No. 13) was crowned Miss World Philippines during the coronation held earlier tonight, September 18, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

The 21-year-old Filipino-French bested 24 other candidates representing different parts of the country.

Helen Nicolette Henson (No. 24) was named 1st Princess. Interestingly, Nicoeltte also finished 1st runner-up at last year's Binibining Pilipinas.

Martha Chloe McCully (No. 9) is 2nd Princess; Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (No. 22) is 3rd Princess; and Jaysel Arrozal (No. 15) is 4th Princess.

The other candidates who made it in the Top 12 are Elaine Kay Moll (No. 12), Rogelie Catacutan (No. 5), Erina Ann Lightholder (No. 25), Samantha Nerville Purvor (No. 1), Mercy Malaluan (No. 11), Charlotte Melissa Tyler (No. 7), and Loucelle de Jesus (No. 16).

Aside from winning the title Miss World Philippines, Gwendolyn was also awarded Best In Swimsuit.
