Miss Universe Scandal: Could Miss Angola Lose the Crown?

Controversy hounds the 2011 Miss Universe pageant after reports claimed the winner, Miss Angola, used false documents to join the contest.

A news article in the Daily Mail, a newspaper in London, dated Sept. 16, 2011, reported that the newly crowned Miss Universe Leila Lopes had used fake documents to get into the pageant.

The Daily Mail said a man identified as Charles Mukano allegedly helped Lopes to join the Miss Angola UK, a beauty contest for Angolan women staying in London, “despite her living in Angola.’’

An Argentine news source reported that Mukano organized the beauty contest that Lopes won. The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) told the AOL Latino that they do not know Mukano. It said the organizer of the Miss Angola pageant is Renato Guttler.

But another report claimed that Mukano allegedly obtained false documents to prove that Lopes is a business student in Britain. The MUO has denied the allegations.

Lopes, 25, is the first Miss Universe from Angola.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was 3rd runner-up.

Missosology, a website on the beauty pageant, posted that in an interview by the French magazine Premiere, 2011 Miss France Laury Thilleman said she doubted Lopes’ victory in the Miss Universe pageant that was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last Sept. 12.

“She’s the only girl that I did not know too well. We did not see her much, she was very discreet. She was often in jeans and no makeup. We were all surprised by her victory. Many girls have made efforts that have not been rewarded. I do not know, there’s something missing in her temperament. The fact that the contest was held in Brazil has certainly played a role,” said Thilleman, who made the pageant’s Top 10.

The other finalists were Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko, first runner-up; Miss Brazil Priscilla Machado, 2nd runner-up; and Miss China Luo Zilin.

Supsup is expected to arrive Sunday morning, following a brief stay in Los Angeles, California.

A grand welcome has been prepared for her.

Apart from the ticker tape parade prepared by the Makati City government, Supsup, 25, is also expected to pay a courtesy call on President Aquino in Malacañang.

The Andi-Albie saga continues: Albie mum on Andi's blog post and on quitting showbiz

When news of young actress Andi Eigenmann’s pregnancy hit the surface and was finally admitted by her father, veteran actor Mark Gil, it spawned interest among showbiz watchers waiting for the revelation of what might be obvious already to some-who the father is.

What made this story so much more celebrated was the fact that, prior to her being in that interesting state, she also went through a controversial breakup with actor Albie Casiño. Not only were there rumors that Albie had been hurting her physically, another nasty issue surfaced when people got wind of Albie’s posts online—via his Formspring account—that cast Jaclyn Jose’s daughter in a bad light. And with that, the possibility of Albie fathering Andi’s child is big news indeed.

After a series of news items that had both sides weighing in on the pregnancy issue, and other names being dragged into the fray— like Jake Ejercito, Andi’s rumored new boyfriend—the 21-year-old mother-to-be wrote a revealing blog on http://andieigengirl.posterous.com dated Sept 4 and titled “#welliwasneverreallytheconventionaltype,” naming Albie as her child’s father.

Andi had originally written: “Maybe instead of feeling bad that Albie left me to take on this responsibility by myself, I should thank him for giving me the opportunity go out and find genuine happiness once again.”

She later added, “I'd obviously love for him to be around eventually. You know, to save myself the struggle to find a good way to explain his absence to his child… All I hope is that he's well.”

However, Andi removed Albie’s name the day after posting the blog—replacing it with the term “baby daddy”—which, according to “The Buzz,” was a move to stop people from reacting further to it.

When Andi was cornered last Friday at an event participated in by her father and brother Gabby Eigenmann, she would only say, “No, I wouldn’t like to comment, sorry…”

He refused to comment on Andi’s blog post, and would not say anything about the rumor that his family is planning to file suit because of it. What he relented to talk about are his future plans.

“Gusto ko naman po talaga mag-aral eh,” he said in the taped interview. “Pero iniisip ko pa kung ano, kasi yung course talaga na gusto ko, psychology. Eh mahirap namang i-balance ‘yun sa showbiz so kailangan po talagang mamili…”

Iza Calzado: I am not dating President Aquino

Actress Iza Calzado denied on Wednesday the rumor that she is dating President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III after meeting the latter at a birthday party last week.

In a report on GMA News TV's "News To Go," Calzado said she only talked to Aquino during singer Ogie Alcasid's birthday party, where the two were introduced to each other.

"I was introduced to the President during kuya Ogie Alcasid's birthday party and I conversed with him there," she said. "As a matter of fact, I was honored to have had the opportunity to talk to him."

The actress, who just arrived from Canada, said she feels embarrassed that her introduction to Aquino has become a big deal.

"The last I checked, there's nothing wrong with (talking to the President), 'di ba? That does not equate to dating the President," she said.

Calzado added that she just came out of a relationship and is not ready for another one anytime soon.

Malacañang on Tuesday refused to comment on the matter.

"We don't comment on the President's social life so I will not comment on that," Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office head Ricky Carandang told reporters at a press briefing.

Aquino, the first bachelor President of the country, earlier said he wants to keep his love life private, but rumors of a potential date or girlfriend are fueled whenever he is seen in a social gathering with a woman who appears to be his date. — Candice Montenegro/RSJ, GMA News

Mario Bautista Strikes Again! Carla Abellana is a Minor Starlet; I Defender her for Malaking Pata Issue

MALAYA:

A RECENT ugly encounter we had with a minor starlet made us realize that one true mark of good breeding is the ability to say thank you. We’ve been writing about showbiz since 1976 and we’ve seen stars come and go. Only a few really know how to thank writers for good things written about them.

First is Vilma Santos, who never fails to thank us for what we write about her. Even now that she’s already a governor no less, we’d still receive personal text messages from her thanking us for writing about her. Then there’s the late Fernando Poe Jr. who even sent us a telegram from Bataan saying he read the article we wrote about him and that he’s shooting in Mariveles so he can’t personally thank us. He later sent us a sack of rice as a gesture of his gratefulness.

Through the years, other stars who extended their gratitude to us for what we wrote about them are Sharon Cuneta, Christopher de Leon, Lorna Tolentino, Gina Alajar, Janice de Belen, Armida Siguion Reyna, Ruffa Gutierrez, Diether Ocampo, Ryan Agoncillo, Marian Rivera (who even said "thanks for defending me"), Iza Calzado, Donna Villa, Lovi Poe, Edu Manzano, Eugene Domingo, Eddie Garcia, and the late Rudy Fernandez.

Among directors, the ones who have thanked for our positive reviews of their work are Joel Lamangan, Jay Altarejos, and Maryo de los Reyes. There might be others, but these are the only ones we can think of at the moment. Nagmarka talaga sila sa amin and we want to thank them for thanking us.

As for that starlet on whom we’ve written so many positive things (we even defended her when other writers made fun of her "malalaking pata" and her inept hosting in "Starstruck") but who never even acknowledged that she read the good things we wrote about her and yet had the gall to lecture us on how we should write our column and to demand that we issue an erratum because she didn’t like what we wrote about her (which is actually meant to promote her new movie), we guess she’ll always remain a starlet. GMA-7 has given her all the breaks but she has never really achieved stardom yet. Barbie Forteza and Bea Binene are even bigger than her now, simply because masa viewers don’t really like her. And to all the writers who took up the cudgels for us, our sincerest thanks for understanding where we stand in this.

The Sun: UK columnist refers to "Filipino dwarves" in tabloid story

Filipinos in the United Kingdom (UK) cried foul as a British tabloid columnist talked of "buying Filipino dwarves" in criticizing Hollywood celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt when they chartered an entire train express there for their kids and entourage.

On August 16, the couple commissioned 14 carriages of Virgin train for them, their kids and entourage for a 5-hour ride from London to Glasgow.

On Aug. 18, "The Sun" guest columnist Rod Liddle wrote: "They should have bought a team of 25 Filipino dwarves to carry them on a giant golden litter all the way up the M6, which they'd had shut for the day."

Filipinos, who felt insulted for what was perceived to be an insinuation that Filipinos are short in height and are slaves, expressed their displeasure over Liddle's column on social networking sites.

On the social networking site Facebook, Gilda Wacan Garcia, a caregiver in London, wrote: "Rod Liddle of The Sun, you are such a dreadful man. Who the hell are you?"

She went on to defend the Filipinos, saying despite being averagely short, they are "pretty."

Joemari Rosales, an employee at the University College London Hospitals, on the other hand, said he was not amused by the "racist" column, even more by Liddle's choice of words.

"To hire a Filipino, I can accept that. But to buy? No way," Rosales said.

According to the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the United Kingdom remains a top market for Filipino caregivers.

One of Rosales' Facebook friends, reacting to Liddle's column, said: "Filipinos are the world's modern slaves. Truth always hurts."

Other "dwarves"

"The Sun" was the same newspaper that made a meme out of Junrey Balawing, the 18-year-old, 22-inch tall Filipino, whom Guiness declared the world's smallest man.

"The Sun" printed a cut-out of Balawing in its March 10 release this year.

The next day, it featured photos of their readers posing with their Junrey paper doll, such as photos of Junrey beside a dog, in front of a football goal, and in bed with a girl.

Lee Price of "The Sun" wrote: "Junrey Balawing is about to be crowned the world's smallest man? But at the rate he's going, he'll soon be the world's most popular man, too."

The Sun: UK columnist refers to "Filipino dwarves" in tabloid story

Filipinos in the United Kingdom (UK) cried foul as a British tabloid columnist talked of "buying Filipino dwarves" in criticizing Hollywood celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt when they chartered an entire train express there for their kids and entourage.

On August 16, the couple commissioned 14 carriages of Virgin train for them, their kids and entourage for a 5-hour ride from London to Glasgow.

On Aug. 18, "The Sun" guest columnist Rod Liddle wrote: "They should have bought a team of 25 Filipino dwarves to carry them on a giant golden litter all the way up the M6, which they'd had shut for the day."

Filipinos, who felt insulted for what was perceived to be an insinuation that Filipinos are short in height and are slaves, expressed their displeasure over Liddle's column on social networking sites.

On the social networking site Facebook, Gilda Wacan Garcia, a caregiver in London, wrote: "Rod Liddle of The Sun, you are such a dreadful man. Who the hell are you?"

She went on to defend the Filipinos, saying despite being averagely short, they are "pretty."

Joemari Rosales, an employee at the University College London Hospitals, on the other hand, said he was not amused by the "racist" column, even more by Liddle's choice of words.

"To hire a Filipino, I can accept that. But to buy? No way," Rosales said.

According to the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the United Kingdom remains a top market for Filipino caregivers.

One of Rosales' Facebook friends, reacting to Liddle's column, said: "Filipinos are the world's modern slaves. Truth always hurts."

Other "dwarves"

"The Sun" was the same newspaper that made a meme out of Junrey Balawing, the 18-year-old, 22-inch tall Filipino, whom Guiness declared the world's smallest man.

"The Sun" printed a cut-out of Balawing in its March 10 release this year.

The next day, it featured photos of their readers posing with their Junrey paper doll, such as photos of Junrey beside a dog, in front of a football goal, and in bed with a girl.

Lee Price of "The Sun" wrote: "Junrey Balawing is about to be crowned the world's smallest man? But at the rate he's going, he'll soon be the world's most popular man, too."

Singer Rain accused of plagiarism

What was supposed to be Rain’s gift to his fans has turned into a big issue of plagiarism.

The Asian pop star released on Aug. 16 the digital single “Busan Woman” which he co-wrote and produced. Rain performed “Busan Woman” for the first time during his “2011 Rain Tour: The Best Show” concert in Busan, South Korea last Aug. 13.

But local media reported that Rain plagiarized the song from Grammy winner and music producer Raphael Saadiq’s “Detroit Girl," a single that is included in his 2004 album “Ray Ray." Netizens say that except for the city names, the two songs are very similar including the title, rhythm and arrangement.

On the other hand, fans are dismissing the allegation, saying that Rain would not do such a thing especially that the singer is scheduled to enlist in the military by end of the year.They said Rain would not risk his career by plagiarizing a song.

J. Tune Camp and Rain denied the allegation that the song was plagiarized from Saadiq’s “Detroit Girl."

Saadiq is a singer-songwriter and producer. He produced songs for Mary J. Blige and TLC. In 2003, his “Love of My Life (Ode to Hip-Hop)” won a Grammy as Best R&B Song.

On the other hand, Rain continues his concert tour in Korea. On Aug. 27, he will be in Daegu. He will also tour in Jeju Island, Gwangju and Daejeon.

The concert finale will be on Sept. 24 and 25 at the Seoul Olympic Park Stadium.

Megastar Sharon to Piolo for KC: 'di ko pinalaki 'yan para i-take for granted lang at balewalain'

Megastar Sharon Cuneta’s message to daughter KC Concepcion in a recent interview baffled not a few, with some speculating that the latter's relationship with actor Piolo Pascual, may have hit some sort of snag.

In an interview with "TV Patrol" on Wednesday, Cuneta seemingly hinted at this when she said, “Basta, Kristina, mama's here. Don’t forget you’re my daughter. We love you.”

She then added, “We went through so much when you were little. You don’t have to go through it yourself.”

Then again, it’s not as if the Megastar was ready to tell all. “I’m not free to talk about what she’s going through,” said she ever so cryptically, adding, what seemed to some, a “coded” message of sorts.

“I just want whoever it is who will be in my daughter’s life will love her and take care of her the way we would. Kasi 'di ko pinalaki 'yan

para i-take for granted lang at balewalain,” she said.

Cuneta added, “Uulitin ko sinabi ng Daddy ko noon: ‘Kahit metro aide ang maging asawa niya basta siya 'yung mahal na mahal, 'yung alagang-alaga.’”

Pascual as with Concepcion are still mum on the matter as of this writing.

Prior, Cuneta was quite vocal in supporting her daughter’s relationship with Pascual, this, ever since the latter admitted to the

matter on “The Buzz,” January this year.

"I am very happy for them. They have my full support. You know I always say that Piolo is a good influence on KC and I am happy also

naman to brag that my KC has also been a good influence on Piolo," said she in an earlier interview with entertainment journalist Ricky Calderon. "I think she has influenced him in a way na ipakita lalo ang pagiging gentleman. Na-touched ako na he stood up for her."

Concepcion’s father, Gabby, also expressed his approval of Pascual.

"Wala akong masasabi kay Piolo kundi puro kabutihan,” said he in a separate report on abscbnnews.com.

He, however, reminded KC that relationships are not always hunky dory.

“Baka may negative din diyan, abangan mo iyon. Be strong. Life is not a bed of roses. Just be ready kasi everybody is susceptible to

intrigues,” he advised his daughter in the same interview.

A Manila Bulletin column published on August 24 titled "Language, learning, identity, privilege" has gone viral online, garnering mixed reactions from netizens, reports GMA News. The column, written by James Soriano, discusses what he believes are problems with the Filipino language.

Soriano, who was taught to use English at a young age, said that learning Filipino stemmed from practicality. "It was the language of the streets: it was how you spoke to the tindera when you went to the tindahan, what you used to tell your katulong that you had an utos, and how you texted manong when you needed sundo na." Though the writer learned to grasp Filipino as the "language of identity," he maintains that it is not "the language of the learned." He ended his column by describing that Filipino "is neither the language of the classroom and the laboratory, nor the language of the boardroom, the court room, or the operating room. It is not the language of privilege."

Reactions online varied from agreeing with his sentiments or taunts on elitism. Twitter user P0yt tweeted: "Dear James Soriano, I'm sorry you had to go through an education like that. Geniuses in my school speak Filipino." Twitter user Ederic also said: "@kimpatria Nakakalungkot, pero kailangang unawain natin ang pinagmulan niya. Meanwhile, assistant instructor at the Ateneo de Manila University English Department Miguel Lizada urged the public on Facebook to understand where Soriano was coming from.

Recently, there have been other reports that were telling of the issues plaguing the national language. On Wednesday, a "language gap" sidetracked House debates on the RH Bill. Previous stories also reported that local youth had difficulty reading and writing Filipino.
