A THOUSAND WORDS - March 23, 2012

A high concept dramedy starring Eddie Murphy about a man who learns that he only has 1000 wordls left to speak before he dies. The movie is directed by Brian Robbins, who also helmed two other comedies starring Murphy : "Norbit" and "Meet Dave". The screenplay will be penned by Steve Koren, who is known for such movies as "Click", "Bruce Almighty" and the upcoming Adam Sandler starrer "Jack and Jill". Take all this information as you will.

THE DEVIL INSIDE - January 6, 2012.

A small-budget horror about a woman who gets involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms. Written and directed by William Brent Bell ("Stay Alive").

RED HOOK SUMMER - Summer, 2012

A drama written and directed by Spike Lee about the Red Hook neighbourhood from Brooklyn. Lee will be reprising the role Mookie from the 1989 classic "Do The Right Thing". Also starring : James Ransome, Clarke Peters, Samantha Ivers and Limary Agosto.

STEP UP 4 - August 10, 2012

Official Synopsis : STEP UP 4 is the next installment in the worldwide smash Step Up franchise, which sets the dancing against the vibrant backdrop of Miami. Emily, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer, but soon falls in love with Sean, a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs. The crew, called the MOB, strives to win a contest for a major sponsorship opportunity, but soon Emily’s father threatens to develop the MOB’s historic neighborhood and displace thousands of people. A drama set in 1960, that follows the evolution of a rock band, called "Twylight Zones". The movie stars Christopher McDonald, James Gandolfini, Brad Garrett and Jack Huston.Written and directed by David Chase, creator of "The Sopranos".

THE WOLVERINE - Pre-Production Update

Filming for the sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" will begin next year. Until then, we're going to get plenty of pre-production news, like, for example, the recent update that tells us the script for "The Wolverine", originally written by Christopher McQuarrie ("Valkyrie"), will be rewritten by Mark Bomback ("Unstoppable", "Live Free or Die Hard"). According to Variety, the story will still take place in Japan and will feature a new character, called Viper:

"The story will find Wolverine suffering from amnesia and searching for answers about his past in the Japanese criminal underworld where he finds both love and tragedy. The entire cast will be comprised of Japanese and Japanese-American actors except for a newly-expanded character named Viper, who's the Caucasian secretary for Japan's Minister of Justice."

Since Ken Watanabe also stars in the movie, maybe he'll be playing the Minister of Justice. He certainly fits the bill. "The Wolverine" will be directed by James Mangold ("3:10 to Yuma", "Walk the Line"). The crew also includes cinematographer Matthew Libatique ("Iron Man", "Black Swan"), production designer François Audouy ("Avatar", "Spiderman") and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick ("Starship Troopers", "G.I. Joe").

New Director for DIE HARD 5

John Moore

Mind you, they are still in final negotiations, but it seems that 20th Century Fox and Bruce Willis have finally decided who they want directing the new "Die Hard" sequel. The lucky director is John Moore, who is (in)famous for such films as "Max Payne", featuring a very upset Mark Wahlberg, "Flight of the Pheonix", featuring a cool plane crash and a creepy Giovanni Ribisi and "Behind Enemy Lines" featuring what I like to call a "popcorn war". To Moore's credit, the previously mentioned films are all very well executed, albeit devoid of any kind of intellectual appeal. Let's face it, if you're looking for an exciting brainless thrill-ride, John Moore is the ideal director. He's certainly demonstrated his ability to stage cool action scenes, which is probably what attracted Fox's attention in the first place. Rumors have it that Bruce Willis needed a little more convincing before he agreed with the studio's choice.




Still, I think that Fox and Willis have not learned anything from the underwhelming "Live Free or Die Hard", which is an okay action flick, but undeserving of the "Die Hard" title. John McClane, once a cool action icon has become nothing more than a computer-generated hero for the "Transformers" generation. Anyway, enough with the fanboy rants. The fifth installment in the franchise is set to take place in Russia and will be written by Skip Woods ("The A-Team", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", "Swordfish").

GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Starts Filming Spring 2012

At least that's what Dan Aykroyd said in a recent interview. The pre-production for "Ghostbusters 3" is turning into something of a soap opera, with Aykroyd pushing to make it and Bill Murray constantly displaying his lack of interest for the project. Of course Murray was one of the main attractions of the Ghostbusters franchise, but since the new movie is going to involve a new batch of Ghostbusting recruits, Murray's participation in the project is no longer a requirement. Aykroyd also dropped a few hints about the characters in the sequel. Here's what he had to say about the project :

"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray, that is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood ... My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac,” he says, “He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation."

The bigger issue here, other than whether or not they're actually going to make it, is if it's even worth making. They had a great cast for the first two movies and an interesting ensemble of characters. Sometimes the magic can be re-created, but it's a gamble, and if Dan Aykroyd is only doing it to get his name out there now that he's not doing a lot of work in Hollywood these days, I'm not sure they can get it right. I think Bill Murray knows this and that's why he's trying to keep himself out of it. They've been testing the waters with some Ghostbusters videogames recently, which means that they're really interested in reviving the franchise. I suppose we should be thankful it's not a remake, but I'm afraid a tired sequel is not the answer, either.

RAMBO 5 Apparently Moving Forward

I wasn't expecting this. I was even blind and deaf by choice to rumors that there will indeed be a fifth Rambo movie and that it will probably be a prequel of sorts and it will pit Stallone's iconic character against some kind of Predator-like creature created by the government. I chose to ignore the rumor simply because it was ridiculous. But, time has passed and I was right to ignore it ... until now. Rumors are slowly beginning to resemble facts as one of the writers of the "Conan the Barbarian" reboot, Sean Hood, has gone public and said the following :

"I recently finished a first draft of Rambo: Last Stand (Rambo 5) for Millennium films, based on a story idea by Sylvester Stallone. Hopefully, Mr. Stallone will eventually have the time and the inclination to do another Rambo...I met with Mr Stallone twice last year…He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he’d written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the Rambo saga…It’s more in line with the small-town thriller of First Blood."

This obviously means that the creature feature is out the window and we'll probably get to see something similar to the original movie. This is as close as they're going to get to a remake, I suppose. If it is indeed a sequel, considering the age of the character, it will be kind of weird if Stallone passes on the role. Rambo is defined by Stallone and I doubt the studios will risk tanking at the box-office with a new actor. If it had been a prequel, changing actors would have been justified, but for a sequel, to a movie that was supposed to be the final chapter, no less, it's just not a good idea. But I can understand why Stallone might not be too excited. I mean, he wrote and directed "John Rambo" with the clear intention to end the franchise. He even gave the character a poetic sort of return home at the end. But, I guess with Hollywood, the fight's never over.

Ridley Scott to Direct the New BLADE RUNNER Movie

Fans of the 1982 classic, "Blade Runner", should worry no more about the upcoming new movie in the franchise, as Ridley Scott, who also directed the original movie, has now joined the project. From the first moment, the announcement that Alcon Entertainment and Warner Brothers acquired the rights for the "Blade Runner" franchise, with intentions to develop a series of movies that take place within the universe of the sci-fi classic, was made, it was not met with enthusiasm. Now, there's new hope to be found with Ridley Scott stepping in as director and producer on the project. The official press release and more after the jump.

Release Date Updates for Next Year's Blockbusters

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, formerly known as "Cobra Strikes", the sequel to the 2009 action blockbuster based on the G.I. Joy toy franchise, is set to open on June 29, 2012, a date which was initially prepared for another one of Paramount Picture's big projects, "Star Trek 2". But, since that movie is still in pre-production (script still being written), it was time to make room for a movie that can actually make the summer deadline. It is unknown at this time whether or not "Star Trek 2" will be released in 2012, or 2013. We'll have to wait and see. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"  stars Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Stevenson, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, Arnold Vosloo and RZA, and is directed by Jon M. Chu ("Justin Bieber: Never Say Never", "Step Up 3D").

MAN OF STEEL, Zack Snyder's reboot of the Superman franchise has been removed from its December 2012 release date and scheduled for June 13, 2013. This move allows the movie a little more breathing room, since 2012 is pretty much packed with all kinds of major releases. The super-hero epic stars Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark's adoptive parents, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Julia Ormond and Russel Crowe as Jor-El. With a dream cast like this, what could possibly go wrong ? Well, with a budget of $175M, let's hope not a lot.

ONE SHOT and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL, two Tom Cruise starrers have also received release date updates. The military thriller "One Shot" has received its first one, February 8, 2011, while "M:I 4" has changed its original December 16 date to December 21, 2011, which means it will open opposite of David Fincher's remake of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". As for "One Shot", its February release date puts it at safe distance from any other big projects from rival studios. Both movies are produced by Paramount Pictures. "One Shot" is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote both "M:I 4" and another Tom Cruise vehicle, "Valkyrie", while the fourth "Mission: Impossible" sequel is directed by Brad Bird who is responsible for some of Pixar's biggest hits, like "Ratatouille" and "The Incredibles".

Steven Spielberg Confirms JURASSIC PARK 4

After a very long time it seems we finally have a definitive answer about the future of the "Jurassic Park" franchise. Steven Spielberg himself dropped the information at a press conference for "The Adventures of Tintin", at this year's Comic-Con. According to him, they already have a script ready and it will probably take two-three years to make and release the sequel. This pretty much explains why Joe Johnston, who directed "Jurassic Park III", was generating some solid buzz around the project for the past few months now. Clearly he's eager to direct this sequel as well, but I hope they'll work hard to make an actual movie this time and not just a tired money-grabbing action flick like part III was. And if we are to believe Johnston's statements so far, it seems they intend to take it in a new direction with some new characters, which will probably lead the franchise into a new trilogy, which is a pretty cool idea, if done properly.
