Angel Locsin, Azkals condole with Younghusbands

MB:

Members of the Philippine Azkals team expressed words of comfort through Twitter for their teammates Phil and James Younghusband, whose mother recently passed away due to a heart attack.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, Jason Sabio wrote, “Cherish life and your loved ones. Celebrate one's life rather than mourn their death. Thoughts prayers and blessings to my dearest brothers.”

He followed this tweet with, “With every death, a choice is thrusted upon us. Choose to celebrate the life that has passed and cherish your own. God Bless Tita Susan...”

Anton del Rosario, meanwhile, also shared words of sympathy to the Younghusbands, “Anything you guys need, the team and I got you... You guys are family… @JYH7 @PhilYHusband Thoughts and prayers go out to the both of you,” said he.

“so sad to hear about their loss. everyone around u guys are there for u. much love to phil & james our thoughts are with u right now,” Simon Greatwich posted. On Saturday, he addressed Phil and James, saying, “thinking of you both :(“

Nate Burkey tweeted also on Saturday, "Thoughts and deep prayers for @PhilYHusband @JYH7 are needed. Blessings!"

On Sunday, former Azkals coach Simon McMenemy posted, "@PhilYHusband @JYH7 tough to find the words. Sending love and support from Sarah and I."

Quoting a text message from Phil and James’ manager Cathy Rivilla, a story on gmanews.tv, reported on Sunday, that Mrs. Susan Younghusband “died of a massive heart attack around 10:30 p.m.” the previous evening.

On Sunday, “Balitanghali” quoted the Younghusband family’s business partner Jojo Durian as saying that her death came as a surprise because she isn’t afflicted with any illness that they know of.

The same newscast related that according to Jojo, Mrs. Younghusband was supposed to have a massage due to back pain when she had the heart attack. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but this proved too late. She was 49.

On Sunday morning, Phil and James immediately flew back to Manila from Bacolod where the team held their training over the weekend. In the meantime, the family declined any request for interview by the media, asking that they be given time to mourn their loss in private.

The remains of Mrs. Younghusband are reportedly interred at the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque. She is survived by her three children namely Phil, James and younger sister Keri.

Aside from members of the Azkals team such as Anton, Jason and team captain Aly Borromeo, “Unang Hirit” reported that model Bubbles Paraiso and actress Angel Locsin already went to the wake on Sunday evening.

"Just came the wake of tita Susan... Big hugs to @JYH7 and @PhilYHusband..." Bubbles tweeted.

With the death of their mother, “Balitanghali” noted that the younger Younghusbands are now orphans as their British father, the late Philip Younghusband Sr., already passed away years ago.

Elmo Magalona's 'Teach Me Hot to Dougie’ version makes trending topic on Twitter

MB:

Young rap artist Elmo Magalona was surprised that his hip-hop act on “Eat Bulaga” recently became a trending topic on Twitter.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like that. But it was the number I did on 'Eat Bulaga,'” Elmo said on “24 Oras,” Sept. 1.

Elmo performed California Swag District’s “Teach Me How To Dougie” on the said noontime show on Aug. 30.

The “24 Oras” report said that “para masabing trending ang topic, kailangang may isang milyong tweets at a given time patungkol sa isang usapin.”

Francis Magalona’s son was more than happy over the public’s response to his number.

“Ilang viewers na natuwa pero pati ako siyempre natuwa dahil ‘yun nakapag-perform ako ng number na gustung-gusto ko talaga,” he said.

Because of this, the cast member of GMA Films’ “Tween Academy: Class of 2012” is now inspired to do his best in future performances.

“Siyempre dahil do’n kailangan ko siyempre ipakita ‘yung mas magandang... I had to make it better pa than the last one, than the biggest one.”

The GMA primetime news program flashed some of the tweets during the report:

“RT @maxenemagalona: Elmo Magalona Elmo Magalona Elmo Magalona!!! @SuperElmo is trending in the Philippines!!! :),” patriziamae tweeted.

For @superceejaay, “Elmo Magalona deserves to be in the trending list! keep him in the list!”

“Elmo Magalona is still trending woohoo! ☺Elmo Magalona! Elmo Magalona! ElmoMagalona! Elmo Magalona! Elmo Magalona! Elmo Magalona!” Claramags tweeted.

Elmo’s sister, Saab Magalona, shared an anecdote that underscored her brother’s popularity.

“Kapag lumalabas kami... there was this one time na na-mob talaga siya. Ako siyempre, ate, talagang parang naging bodyguard talaga ako kasi the girls are going crazy and they were crying... as in Justin Bieber level,” Saab related on “24 Oras.”

Beyonce's pregnant, breaks Twitter record

MB:

Beyoncé’s “big VMA [MTV Video Music Awards] moment” where she revealed her pregnancy to the world set a new record for microblogging site Twitter for most number of tweets per second (TPS).

This is according to a tweet posted by Twitter’s Carolyn Penner on its PR feed, @twitterglobalpr, on Aug. 30 at 5:08 AM.

“Last night at 10:35pm ET, Beyonce's big MTV #VMA moment gave Twitter a record bump: 8,868 Tweets per second,” Penner posted.

The previous record was at 7,196 TPS made during the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals held in Japan on July 17, as posted on Twitter’s official account (@twitter).

The 2011 VMA was held on Sunday evening, US time, at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California.

“Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me!” Beyoncé said as she hit the stage.

After performing her song “Love on Top,” the singer threw her mic on the floor and unbuttoned her purple blazer to reveal her bump as she happily rubbed her tummy.

But some hours before her performance, Beyoncé already broke the news on the red carpet.

Woot! Retweet, Sexting make it to Oxford Dictionary

YAHOO NEWS:

If you don't know what the words "retweet," "sexting" and "woot" mean, then the 100-year-old Oxford Dictionary can now help you pore through these 21st-century terms as they have been recently added to its centenary edition.

The 12th edition of the esteemed Oxford English Dictionary (OED) now contains some 400 new entries, some of which are a testament to the continuing evolution of language especially in the time of the Internet.

In its new edition, the OED defines retweet as a "repost or a forward" of a message on the social networking site Twitter; sexting as the "the sending of sexually explicit photographs or messages" via mobile phone; and woot as an expression of "elation, enthusiasm or triumph."

"The new 12th edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary contains some 400 new entries," said Angus Stevenson, the editor of OED's 12th edition. "These additions are just carrying on the tradition of a dictionary that has always sought to be progressive and up to date."

Aside from the three new terms, new-generation slang such as "cyberbullying," "textspeak" and "noob" have also made it into the list of new words.

While OED acknowledges how new words formed in recent times slowly creep into common vocabulary, it likewise realized how recent developments—especially in technology—have birthed new meanings to age-old terminologies.

This is evident in the dictionary's change of definition of the words "follower" to also mean "‘someone who is tracking a particular person, group, etc. on a social networking site," and "friend" as "a contact on a social networking website."

Huffington Post said Stevenson told a TV interview that "new words often reflect the era in which they were added to the dictionary," commenting on the impact new consumer technologies such as social media and the Internet have had on language.

To prove the new words' ubiquity, the OED had to enter the proposed terms into a database of 2 billion words drawn from contemporary websites and texts, UK's The Telegraph reports.
Earlier this year, the OED had included Internet initialisms such as OMG (Oh my God) and LOL (Laugh Out Loud) to its roster. — with Stacy de Jesus/RSJ, GMA News

Twitter quietly adds new reply feature

GMANEWS:

Micro-blogging site Twitter has silently added a new feature that allows users to tweet someone from the latter's own Twitter page.

Twitter co-founder and executive chairman Jack Dorsey confirmed the feature when a user tweeted him about it Friday.

"As ot today!" he said, when asked by "Jeevan Gill" (@jSammy17) since when someone can "go to someone's page and tweet them from there."

"That's an insignifciant addition, but still welcome," Gill said of the feature.

A separate article on tech site ReadWriteWeb said the feature takes the form of a prompt to post a public reply to any user whose profile page one visits.

"It's a small but logical step to take and one that makes the interface all the more supportive of social interaction," it said.

It added this was the latest added feature to Twitter in one week.

Earlier additions had included activity streams, photo uploaders and media galleries. — TJD, GMA News

What is an @Reply?

A reply is any update posted by clicking the "Reply" button on another Tweet
People say lots of things on Twitter, and sometimes you want to say something back. Your reply will always begin with @username (insert username of the person you are replying to). Anyone Tweet that is a reply to you will show up in your @Mentions tab on your homepage.

To post a reply on Twitter:

Find the Tweet you want to react to on Twitter.
Hover your mouse over their message and click the "reply" icon.
Complete your Tweet in the box that pops up, and click "Tweet" to send it

What is an @Mention?

A mention is any Twitter update that contains @username anywhere in the body of the Tweet. (Yes, this means that replies are also considered mentions.)
We noticed people frequently searching for their user name (@username) to find the Tweets that mention their username anywhere in the message. We collect these messages, as well as all your replies, in the @Mentions tab on your homepage. If you include more than one person's name in your update and you use the @username format, those people will all see the update in their personal mentions tab.

To post a mention on Twitter:

Type your message normally, but replace any names you include with @username (including the person's Twitter username). Our system will recognize and highlight the username that way, as shown below for this mention of @FreelanceWhales (a super cool band that we mentioned).

Hello "New" Twitter, Goodbye "Old" Twitter

Are you still stubbornly using the old version of Twitter.com? The one that's dubbed "Old Twitter" and practically considered history? You are? Seriously? Ah, well. We've got some bad news for you: Twitter will soon force you to stop and switch to "New Twitter."

Twitter broke the devestating news to users via a tweetyesterday, but no one should be particularly surprised that Old Twitter's time has come to an end. We knew that the moment was inevitable ever since Twitter first began rolling out its redesign back in September 2010.

There's little use in fighting the change, it seems. Despite the many demands that Old Twitter be left alone, the microblogging service is still going ahead with its plan to switch all users over to the shiny new version of its site by the end of this week.

So wave goodbye to the old design and embrace the new. Either that or hang on to Old Twitter as long as you can and post angry tweets when you are finally forced to let go.
