Living the Westlife Way

PHIL STAR:

“We know we can sing. That’s the easy part.”

That’s what Shane Filan said about Westlife, the boyband that helped pave the way for bands of the same genre, and that’s what they’ve been happily doing all these 14 years during which they sold over 44 million records worldwide, 14 of them No. 1 singles in the United Kingdom, making them the only artist with the most consecutive No. 1’s in the UK.

Minus Bryan McFadden who has gone solo, the remaining four Westlife guys — that is, Shane, 32; Kian Egan, 31; Mark Feehily, 31; and Nicky Byrne, at 33 the oldest of the group — are coming for a concert at the Araneta Coliseum next Thursday, Sept. 29, as part-promo for their latest album called Gravity, released locally by Sony Music.

“It’s a really good album,” said Nicky in an exclusive phone Conversation (again, the band agreed to talk only to one Philippine paper, The STAR). “It’s one producer. It’s one sound. Maybe it’s taken us 14 years to get there. But it doesn’t matter. We’re here now.”

And here they will stay, well-entrenched on top and unchallenged by the emergence of other bands.

Before he became a Westlifer, Nicky played professional football and represented Ireland at several underage competitions. He’s married to Georgina Ahern, his childhood sweetheart and they have fraternal twin sons named Jay and Rocco, four years old. Except for Mark, the two other members are married, too, and have kids of their own.

Nicky (rightmost) with (from left) Kian, Shane and Mark.
You and the other Westlife guys are coming to the Philippines for a concert on Sept. 29. Welcome back!

“We’re looking forward to it. You know, the Philippines has always been very welcoming to Westlife. Ever since we first went there in 1999, the people there have been so friendly to Westlife and I know that Westlife songs mean a lot to some people there.”
When you were here in 1999, you were new as a group.

“That’s right. We’ve been to the Philippines I think maybe four or five times for promo visits and we’ve done some concert visits. It’s a place that we do like to visit again and again. It’s been too long since we’ve been back, so we’re really looking forward to go back over there and to, you know, sing all our songs for the fans again. It should be very special.”

Their next album Monkey Business, was a worldwide success, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning two singles, "My Humps" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart."

In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have simultaneously held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, with their singles "Boom, Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling," with the next single "Meet Me Halfway" achieving similar success, from the album The E.N.D..

Since 2004, Black Eyed Peas had six tours and have performed in hundreds of sold-out shows and concerts—The E.N.D World Tour in 2009 to 2010 and The Beginning Massive Stadium Tour in 2011.

K-Pop acts that could make it big in the Philippines

YAHOO NEWS:

Now that the Hallyu phenomenon is officially in full swing, many K-Pop acts are seeking bigger and brighter futures as regional stars in Asia and across the world. Established stars like SM Entertainment's Super Junior, Girls' Generation, TVXQ, and SHINee, YG Entertainment's Big Bang and 2NE1, and JYP's 2PM, 2AM, and Wonder Girls are among the many legendary K-Pop artists who are making waves all across Asia, including the Philippines.

Let's take a look at a few K-Pop acts who are currently not available locally but may be quite big if their music was released in the country.

Secret

This four-member girl group officially hit the big time when their single Shy Boy topped a variety of K-Pop music charts, including the Big Three countdowns (Inkigayo, M! Countdown, and Music Bank). Their follow-up Starlight Moonlight was equally charming with its light pop 60s atmosphere. But before Hyosung, Jieun, Zinger, and Sunhwa took the pa-cute route to stardom, they unleashed two aggressive pop-rock tracks to K-Pop radio including the irresistibly brassy radio hit Madonna (the Japanese version of which recently entered the Top 10 in Japan) and the effusively infectious horns-tinged Magic. Reminiscent of Beyonce, but with the sweetness that only K-Pop girl groups can give, a Secret album that compiles these four tracks would be an ideal introduction of this talented foursome to the local market.

Winterplay

Winterplay is a four-piece Korean jazz quartet who came to the Philippines in 2009 as part of the Korea-Philippines Friendship celebration, alongside idol group SHINee and hiphop artists Mighty Mouth. Lee JuHan (trumpet), Choi Woo Joon (guitarist), and So Eun Kyu (contrabassist) amazed the crowd with their excellent pop-jazz material, but vocalist Moon Hye Won charmed the Philippine audience with her warm voice and elegant charm. The band promised to release an album locally, but to date, we have yet to see any new material from this talented foursome. Check out the group's YouTube page here to get a taste of some delightfully seasoned K-Pop jazz.

Piggy Dolls

Filipinos love the divas, and we are generally kinder to, um, plus-sized artists more than other cultures. In an industry of stick-thin idols, Piggy Dolls was supposed to stand out when they debuted, touting impressive vocal skills alongside great dance moves. The way the girls danced and sang despite their size was already noteworthy. Videos of them singing killer vocal tracks like "One Night Only" from "Dreamgirls" only underscored their talent.

Justin Bieber pranks Taylor Swift

PEP:

Justin Bieber tricked Taylor Swift into thinking she'd set fire to a boat and ruined a wedding.

The "Never Say Never" hitmaker managed to convince the singer she'd ruined a couple's big day in an episode of prank show Punk'd—on which he has replaced Ashton Kutcher as host—after inviting her to his house to write a track with him.

A source told Hollywoodlife.com: "Justin called Taylor Swift and asked if she would come over to his beach house and help him write a song for Selena Gomez. Taylor agreed and even asked him to open for her at her show that night in Los Angeles."

While they were at his house, Justin convinced Taylor to set off some fireworks with him, one of which "accidentally" landed on a boat which was hosting a wedding party, setting fire to it and meaning the guests—who were all actors—had to swim to shore.

Taylor was unaware of that fact it was all an elaborate stunt, leaving her distraught, until Justin revealed she was on the show.

The source added: "Taylor didn't start crying but was very freaked out and was like 'OMG I'm so sorry! Justin was trying to downplay the situation. When he said she'd been punk'd she started laughing and said, 'How could you do this to me?' (sic)"

The pair made up, however, and Justin later joined Taylor at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where they performed his hit "Baby" together.

Taylor later tweeted: "You think you've heard LOUD screaming in your life.. Then @justinbieber comes out and does a surprise song during your show. Woah. Unreal.(sic)"

Milestone: Billboard launches K-pop chart

MB:

Korean pop music has been recognized by US music chart publisher Billboard as an important musical genre.

Billboard launched its Billboard K-pop Hot 100 chart with the aim of providing fans with the “most accurate” music chart.

In an article on Billboard.com, Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard chart director, described the new chart as a “milestone event."

“The launch of the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart is a milestone event, as it will provide the Korean music market with what we believe is Korea's most accurate and relevant song ranking,” he said.

The K-pop Hot 100 chart will be based on digital sales from leading Korean music websites and downloads from mobile service websites. Billboard also launched its Billboard Korea site to focus on Korean music.

“The K-Pop Hot 100 debuts simultaneously here on Billboard.com, in the international chart section of Billboard.biz, in Billboard magazine, and also on Billboard Korea's website, billboard.co.kr,” according to the Billboard.com article.

In the last few years, K-pop artists have managed to enter the Billboard chart including the Wonder Girls, Jay Park, Super Junior, Big Bang and 2NE1.

Kim Boom Soo was the first Korean singer to enter the Billboard chart when his song “Hell Goodbye Hello” peaked at No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2001.

In the first K-pop Hot 100 chart, girl group Sistar took the No. 1 spot with the song “So Cool."

The second to tenth places went to Leessang with “I Turned Off the TV," 2NE1 with “Ugly," T-ara’s “Roly-Poly," miss A’s “Goodbye Baby," 10cm’s “Hold Me," Super Junior’s “Mr. Simple," JYJ Kim Junsu’s “You Are So Beautiful," Rain’s “Busan Girl” and Baek Ji Young’s “I Still Love You Today."

"We're excited to be expanding Billboard's globally recognized Hot 100 chart franchise into this country, and look forward to enhancing the K-Pop Hot 100 chart in the near future with additional data as well as creating new charts that showcase the breadth of Korean music,” said Pietroluongo in the Billboard article.

New Single Alert: “One Day” by Charice – Written and Produced by Nick Jonas

SPOT:

International singing sensation Charice Pempengco's "One Day" video is out and it shows the teen singer looking every inch like a bonafide pop star, what with a few snappy dance moves up her sleeve and a decidedly fun yet snazzy getup. Written and produced by Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, the single is an upbeat pop ditty that talks about "the road I took to arrive where I am today,” according to Jonas.

Teen.com called the video "adorable" and "inspiring" and one that will make you want to " break into dance in the cafeteria. Or date that super quiet cutie in our art class…" The track is also available on iTunes.

CHARICE MANIA:

NEW VIDEO UPLOADED BY CHARICE: “ONE-DAY” OFFICIAL LYRICS

Only minutes after her new Bruno Mars-written single, “Before It Explodes” became available for download, Charice tweeted that her new song, “One Day” was also going to be released today. @OfficialCharice said, “Another new song!! Produced and written by @NickJonas http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/one-day-single/id433011301?ign-mpt=uo%3D4”.

“One Day” is a pop track with a much more upbeat sound than “Before It Explodes”, and its tempo is actually much faster than Charice’s no. 1 hit, “Pyramid”. This song was co-written and co-produced by Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers. The inspiration behind the song was Nick’s dream of being a musician and songwriter, and how he achieved it. Nick said that “This song takes me back to when I was young and talks about the road I took to arrive where I am today.”

Charice has a potential hit in her hands with “One Day” and if paired with an incredible video, there’s no way this song won’t climb the charts. Great strategy by Charice’s team in deciding to saturate this day with new stuff from her. After millions of people watch Glee tonight and got charmed by Charice’s “All By Myself” performance, they’ll definitely be searching for her on the web – and all her new singles are just there waiting to be heard and downloaded.
