Silicone Bitch: From the Blogger's Workshop

News and notes about the South Florida social media and blogging scene, with a little tech thrown in for good measure. And maybe some other random events, too.

Writing Class 1
Oh dear! My most important blogging tip? Keep good posture and support your lower back with a pillow! Photo via kchichster's flickr.

Yesterday, I led a workshop and brainstorming session for some wonderful people who are either already blogging or are interested in blogging. We had quite a creative South Florida group: an artist, a PR professional, a neuroscientist and yoga teacher, a financial trader and social media pro, and finally, a professional horse groomer.

My friend Ivan Mladenovic, owner of Preemo -- computer repairs and website development company -- generously hosted the space. Whereas I tend to focus on editorial, Ivan balanced the conversation out by chiming in with some very intelligent points about Wordpress and the more technical aspects of blogging.

Here are just a few things we shared in the jam-packed 2-hour session:

What is a successful blog?
That depends on your definition of "success." If making money is part of that, then yes, a monetized blog that actually makes money would be considered successful. However, blogging can open many doors and help you create community to connect with others. It can enrich your life when you use the blog as a means to an end, to self-publish and explore a topic you're passionate about.

How often should I blog?
This depends on the type of blog. If you are a magazine type blog with a huge readership, you're probably looking at least 3 posts a day minimum because you have a business engine obligated to push advertising. For the average blogger, this is not the case. You can also determine your pace and shape the expectations of your readership. One really good post once a week is better than several crappy, less crafted write-ups put out with more frequency. Quality and quantity need to remain in balance.

What are local Florida resources?
Try WordCamp, Wordpress meetups, WP Beginner and check out Refresh South Florida for Wordpress workshops and other geeky goodness.

Although I was the teacher in this scenario, in reality we were all teaching each other and as usual, I left the session incredibly grateful for the insight my "students" provided.

A "blog" is just an empty vessel, as I always say -- and it's a technical thing anyone can master. What you put in it is the key. Great and regular content is king here. You have to start thinking like a journalist, an editor and a publisher. It's a thing of beauty you can create, so long as you are persistent, consistent and authentic in your endeavor.

I plan on doing more of these workshops in the future. They are by donation and a great time to meet like-minded people who are interested in self-publishing.

Au Revoir~

picture not related but very yummy

Sorry for being absent for so long, it's been almost a week - shocking~
I spent my weekend mainly visiting art museums and eating in fancy restaurants, which was a lovely way to spend my last weekend in Paris
I only have 4 days left here and although I love it, I am looking forward to being back in England

I have classes until Saturday and then I have a 'farewell picnic' with my teachers/classmates before I head home in the evening. I'll also be spending my evenings going out with friends etc. so I am afraid you may have to wait a little longer for any substantial posts from me. ごめん!

I also installed a flag counter on the sidebar today. It's super fresh though, so it looks a little bare right now but lets hope that it fills up soon! I love finding out where my readers are visiting from

Don't forget that you can also keep updated with me on my Facebook, Twitter etc  and in the mean time...

♥My 7 Links Project♥

The wonderful Caroline of 'Spooning with a Schoolboy' nominated me for the My 7 Links Project - her post is here.

The point of the project is to "unite bloggers (from all sectors) in a joint endeavor to share lessons learned and create a bank of long but not forgotten blog posts that deserve to see the light of day again."
So away we go~

My Most Beautiful Post

Kamakura is such a lovely place to visit for the day, so the memories (not only the scenery) of Kamakura are really beautiful to me.

My Most Popular Post

My 2nd ever post! I translated a quiz from an issue of Ageha which determines your eye type and what kind of make-up would suit it, along with a tutorial. I never expected this to be so popular, especially as it had so few comments.

My Most Controversial Post

This post was from a CNN-GO article that was based on a rather controversial topic - dressing children like adults. The journalist's lack of knowledge and poor writing style aside, it raised quite a few questions and discussions.

My Most Helpful Post

This is also one of my most popular posts and I think one of my most helpful too. I wanted to review Japanese hair dyes (specifically ones aimed at gals) as I know lots of Western gals may want to try them at some point but they don't know how they will turn out.

A Post Whose Success Surprised Me

At the beginning of this year I felt the need to express my opinions on gal and where I stand with it. I was so happy to see that I wasn't alone in my thoughts and that so many people offered me their kindness and advice. Thank you all!!

A Post I Feel Didn't Get The Attention It Deserved

This was only a small series with 2 posts on former EGG models (Hiromi and Natsumi) and where they are today. I was hoping for a positive response to these as I wanted to go further with them but they weren't as popular as I had hoped.

The Post I'm Most Proud Of

Once again I'm being a bit cheeky and picking a series rather than an individual post, but I have to mention this as I was so proud of the reactions and feedback I got on these. I really wanted to help bring a positive vibe to the Western gal community. I'm actually thinking of carrying this on (when I get some spare time) but with a new look. What do you guys think?
