These videos were recently taken inside a Japanese denim mill in Okayama, Japan. Watch these vintage shuttle looms in action as they produce selvedge denim.

Shuttle Looms - Japanese Selvedge Denim and American Culture

Shuttle looms were used to produce selvedge denim fabrics in the early 1900's, but as the popularity of denim rose in the 1930's through 1950's, denim mills stopped producing selvedge denim and switched to projectile looms, which were much faster and used less fabric per pair of pants (i.e., mass production). Thus, the shuttle looms were deemed archaic, costly, and time consuming. Japanese companies purchased many of these old machines off of American mills and continue the tradition of making selvedge denim.

The shuttle loom produces selvedge denim as the weft (horizontal thread) is weaved back and forth continuously in a loop, the full length of the machine. When the weft reaches the edge of the machine, it loops back in and starts the process all over again, creating a closed selvedge edge. In contrast, modern projectile loom produces open edges that need to be stitched together, as the weft is weaved only one way (not in a loop).

Who would have thought those ancient shuttle loom machines would once again be on a spotlight half a century later as the producers of high-end denim? And it was the Japanese artisans, who carried on the denim making as it existed in the early 1900's America — the very fabric of American culture.

These vintage shuttle looms continue to make selvedge denim in Okayama, Japan and produce many of the denim fabrics used by our designers. The fabric above is one of the newest projects by Hakari-san, designer of Triple Works and Iron Heart. We will soon see it sewn into denim!

Triple Works to Introduce New Fabrics in Fall 2011

We are excited to hear that Shinichi Haraki, designer of Triple Works and Iron Heart, is working to expand the Triple Works line. Beginning with the fall 2011 collection, Triple Works will have some new fabrics, a 13.5oz and a 17oz. Both are a gray weft denim so the facing will be very very dark. We are looking forward to seeing denim samples using the new fabrics and to see what else Haraki-san has in the works.

Our latest shipment from Triple Works included one of our store favorite denims, the Triple Works tapered leg fit. The Triple Works men's raw selvedge tapered leg features the slim fit that tapers from mid-thigh to the leg opening, a heavy 15oz Japanese selvedge, and availabe in two different indigos, "permanent" of "future". The "permanent indigo" is for the denim enthusiast who wants to see defined fading after prolonged wear and "future indigo" is for the much faster fading.

When side x side, the two denim fabrics look and feel identical. The only difference is how well the fabrics will hold their indigo with wear. Fabric is one wash (pre-soaked in factory) and ready to wear.

Triple Works Japanese Selvedge Denim - Restocks are on the Way!

From Works Corporation, the maker of Iron Heart denim, Triple Works is a Japanese denim brand originating in Okayama and focus of Japanese artisanship. All Triple Works denims are woven on old shuttle looms, rope dyed in pure indigo, and available in different fabrics allowing for different fading times. Our next shipment from Triple Works will be restocks of some of our most popular styles including men's tapered selvedge in permanent and future indigo, men's traditional straight leg, and women's tapered and boyfriend cuts. Triple Works x Blue Owl Workshop "Sulpher Dyed" Black Raw Selvedge Denim

We are proud to introduce our first collaborative project with Japanese denim company Triple Works - - Triple Works x Blue Owl Workshop "Sulpher Dyed" Black Raw Selvedge Denim.

This limited edition model is Triple Works' first black selvedge denim and is made in our store's most popular cut, the men's tapered leg which has a medium rise, slim in the thighs, and tapers from mid-thigh to the leg opening.

Back. Fabric is dark with lustrous finish and is soft to the touch. Fabric is pre-soaked post production and is ready to wear, expect minimal shrinkage.

The denim fabric is woven on vintage shuttle looms in Japan using a blend of Pima cotton which will soften with wear. The warp is sulpher dyed black and the selvedge is red and white. The sulpher dyed yarn will fade like indigo dyed yarn, though not as quickly. Notice the chainstitched hems.

Rivets and doughnut buttons are in dark bronze anodized finish complimenting the dark black fabric.

Sneak Peak - Blue Owl Workshop x Triple Works "Sulfur Dyed" Black Raw Selvedge Tapered Denim

Coming this fall, Blue Owl is proud to introduce our first collaborative project with Japanese denim company Triple Works - - "Sulfur Dyed" Black Raw Selvedge Tapered Denim. This limited edition run is Triple Works' first black denim and will be featured in our stores most popular cut, the men's tapered leg. Sizing will be available from 28-36. Other details include Triple Works signature hidden stitching along the back pockets, hidden back pocket rivets, Triple Works engraved hardware, double lined cotton pocket bags, doughnut buttons, chainstitched hems, a deer skin patch, and of course, made in Japan by Japanese artisans.

The "sulfur dyed" black denim fabric is nearly identical to Triple Works' "future indigo" denim fabric and above is a side by side comparison. The "sulfur dyed" denim is a 15 oz black denim fabric with a warp which is sulfur dyed in black and a white weft. This black denim will fade the same as the indigo, although not as quickly. More details to come in the very near future!

Next week, we will receive our first shipment from Triple Works, Japanese denim label. Triple Works produces Japanesee raw selvedge denim for men and women. All of its denims are woven on old shuttle loom in Japan and rope dyed with pure indigo by Japanese artisans. Triple Works' signature hidden triangle stitching on the back pocket can only be visible after some wear.

Triple Works denim is available with different fabrics. One is "Future Indigo Denim" that fades much faster than normal indigo. Another fabric is "Permenant Indigo Denim" that uses a longer lasting indigo and keeps its dry raw look much longer. We will stock men's Straight Leg and Tapered Slim Leg models in both fabrics. For women, we will carry Boyfriend Tapered cut and Narrow Straight cut with the "Future Indigo Denim." More details to follow upon arrival.
