SisterLocks / DredLocks and Dandruff

O.K I know it has been a while but I've been very busy taking care of my Sisterlocks clients and researching ingredients on the internet. I wanted to find products that would help with dry scalp which seems to be more of a problem now that the weather is changing. Dry scalp is actually the bootleg version of Seborrheic Dermatitis. The characteristics of this condition are

inflamed red patches with greasy or dry scales( full blown)
cradle cap( mild form)
Dandruff (mild form)

Keep in mind that this can show up your forehead, face, ears and well as your scalp.

Some experts say that this condition is actually caused a an overgrowth of yeast with allows skin cells to grow faster than you can shed them off.

Yeast can grow out of control with high fat and high sugar diets!!!

If you suffer from dandruff, do not use all-in-one shampoos and conditioners. The reason is because the conditioning agents in these shampoos act as a sealants on your hair your scalp thereby trapping the residue from the shampoo-this in turn can cause scalp irritation and dandruff.

FYI- Make sure when conditioning after shampooing that your hair is not soaking wet. Towel drying is a must if you want to get the most benefit from the conditioner. Water stops the conditioner from absorbing into the hair shaft, so stop wasting product and follow directions.

I know most of us are big shea butter fans and I am too, but shea butter alone doesn't work for everyone, and it can be heavy and pore cogging to certain skin types. I started looking for other oils that can be used safely without the fear of build-up in my hair and I happened to find two bomb ingredients Perilla Oil and Evening Primrose. I love, love, love these oils. I have been using them on my Sisterlocks and my baby's hair and skin; they both leave my skin and hair so soft. No more "crunchy" locks And I don't even have to use them often. These oils are particularly good for mature skin, wrinkles and ecezma. Type them in the Google box below and look them up for yourself.

Keeping Dandruf Away

Hey ladies! I just wanted to give some tips on keeping your scalp dandruf free If you suffer from bad dandruf it is a systemic problem and usually comes from dehydration. If you eat high sugar and salty foods and greasy foods that could be the cause of your problem. All these dry the body from the inside and SUGAR is the beast that causes nerve damage, blindness, fibroids, lupus and countless other disorders. You can rub some vegetable glycerin and grapeseed oil on your scalp if you have big flakes but it is really about checking your stress levels and diet.

Hi my sister and I watch all of your vids and have perused your online magazines they are lovely and very informative! I just wanted to let u know we use Afro kinky hair by Oscar K and Lord and Cliff (I call it "brick" hair because of the format and the density, lol) and I've lightened it and darkened it successfully using Feria and darknlovely extra light blonde kit. The hair we've purchased was #2,#4,#27 and #30... hope this helps!:)

Things to know about Loc Extensions!

Loc extensions are wonderful if you do not want to go through the short stage of loc'ing or if you just want to start your locs with some length. I do them all the time and there are some things you need to be aware of.

1. Size...locs with be the size of the amount of hair you put in the parts, and the parts must be equal in size to have uniform locs...the bigger the part the bigger the loc.

2. Color...if you get loc extensions, the color of the hair you are using when putting it in your hair, is the color your extensions will always be.. some people want to color their locs after some time but loc extension hair does not color. you can deposit a color of the white hair 613 but you cannot lift dark hair to light...so choose your color wisely because thats the color your gonna be. now if you want color contrast you can mix the color of your extensions and have 2 different colors.

3. Maintenance....you can maintain your hair at home, but at least every 4 to 6 weeks you should go in to the shop to make sure your locs are growing evenly and no new growth has disturbed your parting. you dont want the locs to tangle because your natural hair will love its new found freedom and start growing wildly...lol

4. Stying...loc extensions can be styled just as easily as natural locs...you can rollerset them to make it curly and braid set to make it crinkled . they are wonderful and light weight!

hope this helps you guys and if not ask questions I will try to answer them all.. I have pictures up on fb if you search vixen lash studio

ILML Questions: Hey I would really like to get some fake dreads, how should I go about getting this?

I actually covered that in one of my blogs and in the process of doing it again adn 2nd time.  If you want to leave it in temporarily or just take them for a test drive I suggest using SYNTHETIC dred hair for braiding.  If you are interested in leaving them in cause like me you want to skip the cacoon phase (the funny looking) and get straight to glam (long) use human.

Can Traction Alopecia caused by Braiding / or thinning hair be covered with Locs / Sisterlocks / Dreadlocks - Yes it can be!

Now with any braiding you have to make sure the braider is not braiding too tight.  When the hair is pulled constantly on weaker hair sections it can cause Alopecia. However, there is hope.  Yes you can have those sections covered.  I will feature a site that shows photos of this process:

Can you take out - remove Dredlocks / Sisterlocks? Yes by Combing them out or Cutting them off

http://anothernaturelle.wordpress.com/2010/03/09/how-i-removed-combed-out-my-dreads/

So for the longest time when people would ask me how do you remove dredlocks ? I would always say "You have to cut them off".  However, I've found out recently that was not a true statement.  I just found out and found testimonials of people who actually combed out / unraveled their locs.

So I stand corrected it's truly up to you.  For someone like me who is a Hair-Schizophrenic that's a mental note.  Personally I know a few people who wouldn't dare part with their locs but for some here's another option if you don't want to go the big chop route (which to me would be way easier).  I'd always suggest don't re-twist and just grow out your roots.  I saw a picture of a girl who grew out at least 12 inches of new growth and just kept it conditioned, I saw one girl even permed her new growth (which doesn't make sense to me) but to each her own then just cut off the locks if you just HAVE TO HAVE HAIR LOL! ;0)

I guess it makes sense if your twisting like palm rolling your locs in one direction and not using alot of gook in your locs, I believe you could just un-ravel them the opposite way.  Maybe not in every locs case cause something would have to be cut off I think, but maybe not.

I believe all you need is to soften the hair with some hot water and conditioner then get one of the old school metal afro pick or something small enough to pick the edge out even a metal tooth scraper, s big safety pin and ALOT OF PATIENCE. - Kitty

Removing dreads is not impossible- but it is tedious, so make sure you can dedicate a long weekend to the task. That said, if you'd like to lose your dreads but keep your hair, it can be done.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Conditioning Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Comb- unbreakable, pref. rat-tail
  • hair clips
  • hair shears
  • clean spray bottle
  • movies, audiobooks, etc. for distraction (optional)
  1. 1
Cut the at least the last 1/2 inch from the ends- this is the oldest part of your hair, and likely to be the most securely locked part. You can cut off all of the locked hair and comb out only the new growth as a short cut. However, if you choose to keep most of your hair, cutting the ends is still recommended.
  2. 2
Shampoo your hair, blotting with a towel to remove excess water. Use a generous amount of shampoo on the hair, from end to root. Pick the locks apart using the comb (a pin will help you pick apart very tight locks), working on one dread at a time, combing through the hair as the lock comes apart. As hair dries, moisten with water from a spray bottle and apply more conditioner as needed. This is essentially a massive detangling of the hair.
  3. 3
Place unlocked hair in clips to keep it out of the way while you unlock the remainder. Once all hair is unlocked, wash and condition hair as normal, and style using gentle techniques and tools.
