New on DVD & Blu-Ray : THE EAGLE (2011)

A throwback to the historical epics of yesteryear, "The Eagle", directed by Kevin Macdonald ("State of Play", "The Last King of Scotland"), is a competent adventure flick that will appeal to those who want to enjoy a good action flick, but also to those who like a little historical depth to go along with the epic fights. Macdonald, being a documentarian at heart, makes this much more than just a mindless violent version of history. The level of detail he displays here is the best thing about this movie. The Blu-Ray and DVD releases also include the Unrated edition which basically adds or extends scenes containing graphic violence, which would have raised the rating from PG-13 to R in theaters. Even so, don't expect it to be as violent as, let's say, "Centurion".

THE VOW - Trailer

"The Vow" is your average sugar-coated tragic romance. It's no surprise that they make it clear in the trailer that the actors, Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, have previously played in movies like "The Notebook" or "Dear John". It's exactly that kind of movie, the kind that relies heavily on its charismatic actors, although that honestly applies more to McAdams than Tatum, and a tear-jerking script. Directed by Michael Sucsy who got some major attention, including awards, with the true story drama "Grey Gardens", and written by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who managed to underachieve with star-studded rom-coms like "Valentine's Day" and "He's Just Not That Into You". The movie also stars Sam Neill and Jessica Lange. It will open on February 10, 2012.
