The Iglesia ni Cristo has launched its “Ciudad de Victoria” centennial project in Bulacan anchored on a 50,000-seater domed hall touted as the world’s largest covered arena.
INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo led the groundbreaking in Bocue town for an infrastructure program consisting of the New Era Sports Complex, EVM Convention Center, New Era University-Bocaue Campus, EGM Medical Center and Music Center.
Housing units will be included in time for the church’s 100th year ceremony in 2014.
Bulacan Gov. Willy Sy-Alvarado welcomed the infrastructure, paying homage to INC in making the province a major devotional destination.
“On behalf of the Bulakeños, I thank Iglesia ni Cristo for establishing Ciudad de Victoria here to mark the church’s centenary,” he told Manila Standard.
Populous, a global architectural firm, was tapped to design the hall called “Philippine Arena” along with Buro Happold engineers.
“The building’s capacity pushes the boundary of Arena design and will eventually establish itself as the world’s largest indoor arena,” said project director Andrew James, Populous senior principal on World Architecture news.com.
“The form uses simple geometry to create an elegant appearance, while also giving the venue a powerful presence within its setting.”
As planned, 50,000 more people will be able to gather at a “live site” in the sorroundings for major events.
Also at the groundbreaking was vice chairman Kim Hyun-chung, of contractor Hanwha Engineering and Construction Corp., a South Korean firm.
According to Korean Herald, the estimated $175 million contract signed last Aug. 4 involves the arena with a 74,000 square meter floor area and a dome roof measuring 74,000 square meters.
“Philippine Arena is three times bigger than the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, Korea’s largest indoor Arena,” said a Hanwha E&C official.
