Survivor Ready!? Richard Gutierrez's ultimate challenge

PHIL STAR:

Richard is preparing for the upcoming season of GMA 7’s Survivor Philippines.

“It’s an exciting season and I can’t wait to begin my work (as host),” he says. “But there’s a bit of nervousness and excitement. I’ll be (in the island) for around 40 to 45 days and (living there) won’t be that easy. However, I now have expectations (and the idea of) how it goes. Last year, I found it difficult because it was my first. Now, I already experienced (how it was like doing the show). Things will be easy. I’m more aware of possibilities and what might happen. For this year, there will be more twists. We have a good line-up of celebrity castaways. The challenges are bigger (and more difficult).”

Asked to give details on the castaways’ island playground, Richard replies jokingly, “Dyan lang sa kanto ng Maldives.”

Before the castaways reach the undisclosed tropical island devoid of modern amenities, Richard and the Survivor team have to acclimatize first and try the challenges.

“They ask for my inputs,” he says. “I don’t demand (that they should be included). As much as I can, I work with them well. I also let them decide because it‘s part of the producers’ job.”

Although Survivor Philippines is a reality-show where every moment or action is caught on cam unadulterated, Richard remains bounded but not dictated by the script.

“Of course, there’s a script we have to follow (and instructions for the challenges are stated in it),” he shares. “But I can put all of those into my own words. It serves as a guideline. There’s no Take Two. As much as I can, I don’t want to make a mistake during spiels. I have to memorize everything. I should not miss any detail and the safety precautions of each challenge since I’m the only one who can stop the game. If someone gets injured (or needs something), I should know what to do (or say). There are producers who take care of the tasks and they give me updates like these castaways fought and this what happened in the camp.”

Any time now, Richard is all set to fly to that island paradise and assures everyone that “we will try to make things even better this year.”
