Melanie Marquez may not be known for eloquence in English but it seems the former beauty queen and model-actress is now taking it upon herself to encourage new beauty titlists to show love for our country by championing the Filipino language.
In fact, Marquez has offered an advice to Shamcey Supsup, who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2011 in April, for the upcoming Miss Universe competition. “Mas maganda [kung gagamitin niya ang wikang Filipino] para at least malaman ng iba na mahal talaga natin ang kultura natin,” she was quoted as saying in a report on abscbnnews.com.
She went on to say that Supsup should do well to use an interpreter if there’s one available.
According to Marquez, the competition will be a great opportunity for Supsup to highlight the beauty inherent to the Filipino language.
Further, Marquez told Supsup to be confident and “just be natural.”
Marquez is known for mangling her English – most famously during the Q & A portion of the 1979 Bb. Pilipinas-International tilt, where, in answer to pageant host Eddie Mercado’s question about which part of her body she is most proud of, she quipped, “I won’t change my legs, ‘cause I’m contented with my long-legged.”
Though she won the contest, ultimately being crowned Miss International the same year in Tokyo, Japan, prior to launching a career in show business, Marquez is not eager to recommend that Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Shamcey Supsup do the same.
Marquez was adviser and trainer to Ruffa Gutierrez, who went on to become Second Princess in the 1983 Miss World pageant; Charlene Gonzales, who snagged the Fourth Runner-up position in the 1994 Miss Universe contest; and Miriam Quiambao, Miss Universe 1999 First Runner-up.
Apart from the 1979 Miss International Pageant, Marquez also won the grand plum in the 1985 Face of the 80s tilt in New York. She was also a first runner-up in the 1986 Supermodel of the World competition. In 2005, she represented the Philippines in the Mrs. World pageant in India, where she ended up as one of the six finalists.
Supsup, for her part, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines-Diliman with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Supsup also topped the June 2010 Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010.
Supsup is set to compete in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 12.
