Meet My Friend Alecia a recipient of a new procedure called GASTRIC SLEEVE

On the Pink couch with Alecia:
KS:  What procedure did you have done?

Alecia:  I had a weight loss surgery called Gastric Sleeve in Tulsa, OK.

KS:  What is the difference with that and gastric bypass?

Alecia: Gastric Bypass....small stomach pouch is created and attached directly to the proximal small bowel.

Gastric Sleeve...80% of my stomach was removed.

Both procedures are non-reversible.

Laparoscopic Roux en Y (Gastric Bypass) is the most time proven weight loss surgery. A small stomach pouch is created and attached directly to the proximal small bowel. Food intake is decreased due to the small stomach. Some hormonal changes occur when the proximal small bowel is bypassed. The majority of the patients lose their appetite. The surgery discourages the patients from eating large amounts of carbohydrates since they can develop uncomfortable symptoms of dumping syndrome.

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve is a surgical procedure that removes 70% - 80% of the stomach. This will restrict the amount of food a patient can eat during meals. There is also a decrease in the amount of hormone that is secreted by the stomach that makes us hungry.

KS:  You look great how much weight did you lose?
Alecia:116 lbs to date :) happy

KS:  So the hard questions, what type of preparation were you required to do to loose the weight.?

Alecia:
1 month prior to surgery the prep began....stopped alcohol (I still have not had a single drink.)....stopped coffee...diet for 3 weeks...1 week prior to surgery went on a liquid protein diet

KS:  How did the recovery take and did it  hurt?
Alecia:Recovery was REAL hard for me.  This was my first surgery ever!  The first 3 days were the worst.  Ya gotta remember this is major surgery.  I barely could walk, needed help to get out of the bed and had to sit down to take a shower.  They made me walk after surgery.  Thank God my Dad stayed with me at the hospital (3 days) and helped me every step of the way for the 6 week recovery period.  Thank God I had no other distractions like work or kids.  100% was focused on my recovery.  The first couple weeks were hard.  I had to do daily blood-thinner shots in my tummy (yikes) for two weeks and wear leg compressions to avoid blood clots.  Again, thank God for a problem free recovery...NO complications!

KS:  Why did you choose this method as opposed to lapband or gastric bypass?

Alecia:Well lab band only restricts the amount of food that can get to the stomach.  But, I have family members who regained weight after this procedure cause they started eating "slider foods" like shakes and mashed potatoes.

Now, gastric bypass reroutes your intestine and had more complications.  Now, gastric sleeve removed part of my stomach but maintained all functionality.

KS:  What are the risks?

KS:  I know you , but my readers are just meeting you, so I know you are a stick to the book kinda girl what is your routine now as far as work out?
Alecia:I work out 5 days a week.  I do hard cardio on the elliptical for 45 minutes and 3 days a week I'll add in light arm weights.

KS: Are you required to take supplements or certain foods?
Alecia:
The main thing is protein.  I am on a high protein/low carb diet.  I eat lots of veggies and NO alcohol.  I drink a ton of water, 2 1/2 liters a day.

Supplements-multi-vitamin, calcium, fiber, probiotic and fat burner.  I shop @ GNC.

KS:  So overall how do you feel?
Alecia:
I FEEL AMAZING!!!!!!!!  I also have NO saggy skin!!!!  LOL
