A good book, a so-so movie.

Back here with my recommendations! This time it is for the Nicholas Sparks book & movie: The Last Song.
Now, to start things off...I struggle with Nicholas Sparks (which is ironic, considering how much my first book, Perfectly Imperfect, is compared to his style. Oh well.) because his books are so saccharin sweet and predictable. You can almost guarantee someone is going to bite it in his books, and that he is working his AZZ off to make you cry. (And before anybody points it out to me...I realize that this joke is on me, because he has an agent and a successful career, and I do not. So poop on me.)

That having been said, some of his books are fabulous. The Wedding is wonderful, and we all blubbered our way through The Notebook and then I, like everyone else, hated the ending of Dear John, though the movie ending was better than the book. The book left me wanting to throw it against the wall and curse Mr. Sparks' name! So I went into The Last Song with my defenses up, to say the least.

So here's the deal: I'm not a big Miley Cyrus fan. I don't really know why, she just rubs me the wrong way, though my 8 year old daughter would disagree. So I avoid things with her in it. Because it makes me want to gouge my eyes and ears out. However....she impressed me in this movie. She was totally decent. Her voice still made me want to go deaf, but overall, her performance was great. And Greg Kinnear was wonderful as well. I was impressed with his performance as well.  And I'm not easily impressed. I fancy myself a perpetual grump. So there.

So the bottom line is: The book will make you sob. The movie will make you tear up. The book will make you smile and remember being a pissy teenager. The movie will make you smile and remember how annoying Miley Cyru's low, smokers voice is. The book will make you want to hug your dad. The book will make you want to hug your dad and find a ridiculously cute little brother to hug, as well.

Go and read. Go and watch. Go and enjoy.

Brooke Moss.
