First day.

Today is the first day of school for my kids. I am as giddy as a little kid on Christmas. I don't mean to be, but I am. It's big news around here!

My oldest is starting middle school. Ugh. Middle school. Called Junior High where I come from...but that was a million years ago. As I was waiting for him to get dressed this morning, I had some major flashbacks. Acne, braces, un requited love, homework, pre-algebra, crushes, awkwardness, and more. I wouldn't want to relive this crap for all the tea in China, that's for darn sure.

It made me wonder if writing about Junior High might be fun. When I was a kid, I used to read the Babysitters Club books (Yes, they've been around for that long) and think that it would be fun to write about that age. Heaven knows I would certainly be adept in being awkward and geeky. And the un requited love thing...hey, I got that down pat, too.

But there are a lot of y/a books out there. And it seems to me that there are more every single day. Crap, even I am reading some of them lately! Plus, I don't think I could tone down my "heat" in places, and instead of it being like tween love, it would wind up more like naughty high schooler love, and nobody wants that. I guess I should stick to my genre. Oh well.

But still, all jokes aside, I feel really sorry for my son. Really sorry. Middle school (junior high) sucks royally.

Brooke Moss.
