But, I digress...so anyway, I've known her through church for a few years, she's been avidly supporting my writing endeavors via Facebook, and patiently waiting her turn to read my books. I've been hesitant, because some of my stories are considered sexy (how sexy, you ask? Check my post on my pen name, and that should answer your questions.) and when it comes to my church friends, I feel like I have to be careful because I don't ever want to offend someone's morals at all, but I also want to be true to my own writing and my own writing styles, etc.
That being said, I decided to give Zina a chance because she seems like a pretty chill lady. She's got a real "been there, done that" attitude that I love, and I think she should read about my characters I love so much. I decided to let her read my first book, Perfectly Imperfect, first. It isn't nearly as good as the This Ominous Secret books, but it's a good place to start. To quote Glinda the Good Witch, "It's always best to start at the beginning." So that's what we'll do.
I gave my friend a link to this blog, so that she could familiarize herself with my style, etc, beforehand. So I thought that I would give her a little excerpt about Perfectly Imperfect for her to read...kind of like the blurb that is written on the back of a paperback book. Now, if you've read my post about having pitch anxiety, then you are well aware that condensing an entire book (pushing a word count of....well, it's too damn long, let's just leave it at that.) is a bit hard for me, but here goes:
Small town girl (Gennie) lives in a dysfunctional home in Oregon with her parents and the ghost of a tragically killed brother. After a particularly damaging argument with her alcoholic father, Gennie and her best friend, Claudia, (who is very reluctantly heading down the aisle with Matthew, the town darling) head east on an impromptu road trip with no plans, no maps, and no real direction. On the road, they join up with some British travelers, one of which brings along with him nothing but trouble, and another who laid eyes on the very bitter and self-sabataging Gennie and experiences instant kismet. The mismatched group of travelers find their way to the mountains of Montana, where Matthew and Claudia come to a crossroads in their relationship, and Gennie must decide whether or not to let herself fall in love and run away with her new love, or to head back to Oregon to face her responsibilities at home.
Ok. That's it in a nutshell. I originally wrote this story when I was 19, and it was 1995, so you may notice some very 90's undertones. For instance, everyones style is very grunge-inspired. And Caleb, the main male character, is the epitome of what floated my boat in 1995. Flannel shirts, picking a guitar, messy hair, british accent....rrrrrrrraaaaawwwwl! :) When I originally wrote the story, I based it on a circe 1994-95 Gavin Rossdale. YUM. Double yum. But when I rewrote it, the character had stayed 21, and Gavin had aged some. So now I have friends refer to him as an Adam Brody, a Justin Chatwin, and (my favorite....otherwise known as my boyfriend) Rob Pattinson. So......picture whomever floats your boat. *SIGH*
Anyway, hope she likes it. I can't wait for her to read This Ominous Secret series...so much better. It's just thrilling to have someone getting emotionally invested in my characters. (Though Gennie is a pretty frustrating character. Some have called her unlikable, others have said they really related to her.) Ok, enough chatter.....
